Garden City Public Schools Welcomes New Teachers

The newest members of the district staff participated in an intensive three-day orientation program led by Assistant Superintendent for Personnel, Dr. Fino Celano.

The Garden City School District welcomes 11 new teachers this year, six of whom are filling in for teachers on leave.

The newest members of the district staff participated in an intensive three-day orientation program led by Assistant Superintendent for Personnel, Dr. Fino Celano.

The new teachers attending orientation were welcomed by Board of Education members, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Robert Feirsen, members of the district’s administrative team, PTA Executive Board President Cristina Kilberg and SEPTA Co-Vice President Stella Cristoforo. The district congratulates the following new professionals and extends its best wishes for a successful 2012-2013 school year:

  • Kady Berman - School Psychologist, Garden City High School/Garden City Middle School

Ms. Berman holds a B.S. in psychology from Fordham University and an M.S. in school psychology from Queens College. She served as a regular substitute school psychologist in the Garden City primary schools from Feb. 15, 2012 to May 31, 2012. She was a leave replacement school psychologist at Hommocks Middle School, Larchmont, NY from September 2011 to January 2012. She completed her internship at the Elwood School District from September 2010 to June 2011. Ms. Berman holds provisional New York State certification as a school psychologist. She is filling in for Melina Mendelson, who is on child care leave.

  • Catherine Califano – Speech, Garden City Middle School

Ms. Califano holds a B.A. in speech-language hearing sciences and an M.A. in speech-language pathology from Hofstra University. She served as a speech-language evaluator at the Hebrew Academy for Special Children, Woodmere, NY from November 2010-present, and was a speech-language pathologist at the Hicksville UFSD from September 2004-June 2010. Ms. Califano holds permanent New York State certification in speech and hearing handicapped and has a New York State license as a speech-language pathologist. She is filling in for Danielle Goodwin, who is on child care leave.

  • Erin Conlon - Elementary Education, Stratford School

Erin Conlon holds a B.A. in elementary education/special needs and English and an M.Ed. in curriculum and instruction from the Lynch School of Education, Boston College. She served as an elementary education teacher in the Cold Spring Harbor School District from 2006-2011. Ms. Conlon holds permanent New York State certification in elementary education Pre-K-6. She will be filling in for Mary Brown, who is on child care leave.

  • Gina Curcio - World Language, Garden City Middle School

Gina Curcio holds a B.A. in Spanish and an M.A. in teaching-secondary education from Quinnipiac University. She completed her student teaching at the Dodd Middle School, Cheshire, CT in the spring of 2012. Ms. Curcio has also served as a tutor for 10th and 11th grade Spanish. She studied abroad at Colegio Alameda De Osuna, Madrid, Spain while an undergraduate. Ms. Curcio holds New York State certification in Spanish 7-12. 

  • Erin Hegmann - Elementary Education, Stratford School

Ms. Hegmann holds a B.A. in political science from the College of the Holy Cross and an M.A. in elementary education from Teachers College, Columbia University. She served as a regular substitute elementary education teacher at Stratford School from November 2010-June 2011 and from October 2011-January 2012 and was also a per diem substitute teacher in Garden City schools. She was an elementary education teacher at the Ethical Culture Fieldston School, New York, NY from 2001-2005. Ms. Hegmann holds permanent New York State certification in elementary education K-6 and professional New York State certification in students with disabilities (grades 1-6). 

  • Emily Judge – Mathematics, Garden City Middle School

Ms. Judge holds a B.S. in mathematics and an M.S. in teaching adolescence mathematics from Fordham University. She completed her student teaching at Mineola High School in the spring of 2012. Ms. Judge holds initial New York State certification in mathematics 7-12. She is filling in for Anne-Marie Daniels, who is on child care leave.

  • Michael Korn - Special Education, Garden City High School

Mr. Korn holds a B.S. from SUNY at Oneonta and an M.S. in elementary education/special education from Touro College. He served as a leave replacement special education teacher at Plainview Old Bethpage Middle School from January 2012 to March 2012 and has been an ABA teacher at the TAG Afterschool Autism Program at Mattlin Middle School/Stratford Road Elementary School, Plainview, NY from September 2010 to the present. Mr. Korn holds initial New York State certification in students with disabilities (grades 7-12) generalist, students with disabilities (grades 5-9) generalist, students with disabilities (grades 1-6), generalist in middle childhood education (grades 5-9) and childhood education (grades 1-6).

  • Angela McLaughlin - Theatre/English, Garden City High School

Ms. McLaughlin holds a B.A. in communications from the University of Scranton and an M.A. in drama from the University of Toronto. She served as an English teacher at Deer Park High School from 2009 to 2011 and was an English and drama teacher at Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis High School, NY, NY from 2005 to 2008. Ms. McLaughlin holds professional New York State certification in theatre, grades K-12 and English language arts, grades 7-12.

  • Erica Rivera - Social Studies, Garden City Middle School

Ms. Rivera holds a B.A. in public justice from the State University of New York at Oswego and an M.S. in secondary education social studies from Hofstra University. She served as a substitute teacher in the Wantagh UFSD from September 2009-present, in the North Shore School District from September 2011-present, and the New York City Department of Education from October 2011-present. Ms. Rivera holds initial New York State certification in social studies 7-12. She is filling in for Erica Fregosi, who is on child care leave.

  • Sarah Toca – Music, Garden City High School/Garden City Middle School

Ms. Toca holds a B.M. in voice performance from Wheaton College Conservatory of Music and an M.M. in music education from Eastman School of Music. She did her student teaching at West Irondequoit High School and Scribner Elementary School, Penfield, NY, in the spring of 2012. She also worked with the choral ensembles at Hochstein School of Music and Dance in Rochester, NY. Ms. Toca holds initial New York State certification in music, grades K-12.

  • Erin Watson – English, Garden City High School

Ms. Watson holds a B.S. in secondary English education from Hofstra University and an M.S. in secondary literacy education from Queens College. Ms. Watson served as a regular substitute English teacher at Garden City Middle School from February 2012 to June 2012. She was a leave replacement English teacher in the Levittown School District from October 2011 to December 2011, was a teaching assistant at the Massapequa School District from September 2010 to June 2011, and held various leave replacement teacher positions in the Bethpage Union Free School District from September 2008 to June 2010. Ms. Watson holds initial New York State certification in English language arts, grades 7-12. She is filling in for Crystal Ferraiolo, who is on child care leave.
