GC Firefighters Help Battle Suffolk Brush Fires

Crews dispatched to the hilly region along Route 108 in Cold Spring Harbor.

During the searing temperatures and blistering heat wave in the late afternoon Wednesday, Garden City firefighters were requested to assist Suffolk County with a serious brush fire in the Cold Spring Harbor area.

Due to the high temperatures and extreme dry conditions, brush fires were rampant across Long Island. Due to the duration and extent of the brush fire, additional mutual aid crews were needed to assist in the extinguishment of the fire and to relieve crews that had been battling the blaze for hours.

Nassau County sent a compliment of units to Suffolk County which included Garden City's local firefighters. First Assistant Chief Charles Cavarra coordinated the deployment from Garden City Fire Headquarters. Assistant Chief Cavarra sent Second Assistant Chief Bill Castoro, an engine company and crew of firefighters to Cold Spring Harbor. In addition, he maintained an additional crew of firefighters in the village's Fire Headquarters to handle any village alarms while the crew operated in Suffolk County.
