Police: Husband Tries to Choke Wife at the Wheel

Police state woman was having a verbal argument with her 75-year-old husband, the front seat passenger, when he began to choke her.

The following arrest information was supplied by the Garden City Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

Sept. 12: A police aide conducting traffic enforcement on Cherry Valley Avenue in the vicinity of Garden City Middle School alerted police officers of a domestic occurrence at his location. Upon arrival a female 69-year-old stated that as she was driving her vehicle eastbound on Stewart Avenue, she was having a verbal argument with her husband, the front seat passenger, when he began to choke her. The subject, a male 75-year-old from New Hyde Park, was placed under arrest for criminal obstruction of an airway and reckless endangerment.

Sept. 12: Garden City officers, along with New York State DOT, conducted a commercial vehicle inspection on Clinton Road where 19 trucks were inspected at the checkpoint and eight were placed out of service; 98 traffic tickets were issued for various traffic and safety regulations, including 24 tickets issued for overweight violations and two tickets for oversized vehicles.

Sept. 13: Officers were assigned to monitor polling places throughout the village during the primary elections. There were no unusual incidents reported.

Sept. 13: A bicycle valued at $400 was stolen from a bike rack at the Nassau Boulevard train station. The owner had locked the bike to the rack earlier in the day.

Sept. 13: Officer Bandl stopped a vehicle on Ninth Street for an expired inspection. Upon his investigation, the operator, a female 31-year-old from Valley Stream, was arrested and charged with aggravated unlicensed operation, second degree, for a prior DWI; aggravated unlicensed operation, third degree, for three open license suspensions; suspended registration; and an expired inspection.

Sept. 13: A Woodside resident reports the loss of an Android cell phone in the vicinity of Hilton Avenue.

Sept. 14: At 11:47 p.m., officers responded to a one-vehicle accident on Rockaway Avenue at Merillon Avenue where the vehicle struck a tree. Upon the investigation at the scene, Officer Florio arrested the operator, a female 47-year-old from Garden City, for DWI (.09 percent blood alcohol content) and uninsured operation. The driver was not injured and there were no passengers.

Sept. 15: Officer Sansone stopped a vehicle on Clinton Road at Meadow Street for speeding (50 mph in a 30-mph zone). It was determined that the driver, a male 17-year-old from Hempstead, held a junior permit only. He was charged with unlicensed operation, speeding, as well as the following junior license/permit violations: operating a vehicle without supervision, operating a vehicle with passengers not wearing seatbelts and driving with more than two (3) passengers under the age of 21.

Sept. 16: Officer Russell stopped a vehicle for speeding on Franklin Avenue at Fourth Street (45 mph). It was determined that the operator, a female 22-year-old from Hicksville, had two outstanding license suspensions. She was charged with aggravated unlicensed operation, speeding and uninspected operation.

Sept. 17: Officer Sommer stopped a vehicle on Stewart Avenue for speeding (47 mph in a 30-mph zone) and determined the registration to the vehicle was suspended as well as the operator, a female 22-year-old from Smithtown, having two outstanding license suspensions. She was charged with aggravated unlicensed operation, suspended registration, speeding and uninsured operation.

Sept. 17: Keys were taken from a locker at the New York Sports Club. and apparently used to steal a 2003 GMC Yukon parked behind the sports club. The lock placed on this locker was missing. Also, $152 and a credit card were taken from another locker at the club. The lock placed on this locker was found to be broken.

Sept. 18: During a severe weather storm in the evening hours, the department responded to approximately 25 calls for extreme flooding conditions, stranded motorists, tree limbs down and alarms. Several vehicles had to be towed from flooded areas. Two vehicles were damaged by fallen tree limbs.

Sept. 18: A bicycle was stolen from the rear yard of a Grove Street residence.

Sept. 18: During an investigation at Garden City Police headquarters, Officer Touhy arrested a female 27-year-old from Garden City for two outstanding Nassau County larceny warrants.
