POLL: Which Business Will You Miss Most?

Several Garden City businesses closed their doors in 2011.

Garden City businesses continued to struggle in 2011, with popular establishments like Hoffmann's and Upper Crust Café closing its doors this year.

An Italian deli is set to open where Hoffmann's once did business and there's interest in the vacant store front formerly known as Garden City Chemists, also on Seventh Street.

Hoffmann's: One of Garden City's longest operating establishments closed its doors in March. Opening in 1932 at 180 Seventh Street, Hoffmann's was the oldest store in the same location on Seventh Street, according to village historian John Ellis Kordes. The deli was well known for its signature sandwiches, including the popular "Godfather."

McMahon Realty, Inc.: McMahon Realty, Inc. closed its doors in late October. Previously located at 166 Seventh Street, the realty company moved to 679 Franklin Avenue in August 2002, according to Althea Robinson, executive director of the Garden City Chamber of Commerce.

Upper Crust Café: Upper Crust Café was the most recent Garden City business to fall victim to this still ailing economy. The luncheonette turned café called Franklin Avenue home for more than two decades, treating diners to breakfast, lunch and more recently dinner. Ashley and Nicholas Lucchesi, chef, were the cafe's newest owners.

Garden City Chemists: Another business to close on Seventh Street in 2011 was Garden City Chemists, which had no affiliation with the previous drug store that inhabited the same address at 152 Seventh Street. Anthony Bambace, pharmacist/owner, made house calls to Garden City residents and also offered free delivery.

Such a shame. It would be nice if the people of Garden City, that do support the locals, maybe did a little bit more. It's so important for the town to have a robust downtown. It really becomes a proxy, in a way, for how good a town is. We have a great downtown and it's something to really be thankful for.
