The Demensions Bring Doo Wop to the Village Green

Despite the rain, residents turned out for the final show of the recreation department's popular summer concert series.

Though rain tried to chase residents away from the village green Thursday for the final installment of the Garden City Recreation Department's popular summer concert series, many used trees for cover to see The Demensions, a doo wop group that originated in the Bronx in the 1960s with two Billboard Hot 100 hits.

"We didn't invite the rain, but it came in anyway," singer John Martinucci said.  "I'd ask you to get up and dance, but you might fall."

The Demensions came together in 1960 and reached number 16 on the charts with their rendition of "Over the Rainbow," and later hit number 95 in 1963 with "My Foolish Heart."

The popular sounds of doo wop was a departure from the recent lineup of big band music at the village green, and residents sang along and clapped to "Don't Give in to Him," "Pennies from Heaven," "Stupid Cupid," "That's the Way It Goes," "Tonight Could Be the Night" and "Young at Heart."

The band features four singers, a lead guitar, a bass guitar and a drummer, with singers alternating leads from song to song.

Though it rained at the beginning of the concert and the village green was damp, the weather cleared up nicely for the second half of the show, with the bright lights of the gazebo shining under a rain-free sky.

"I'm really, really thankful that you guys came out in this weather," Martinucci said.
