Eagle Scout Candidate Inspires All to “Rock Above the Influence”

Scout’s project aims to raise awareness for drug and alcohol abuse through Battle of the Bands.

“Rock Above the Influence,” that's the message Frank Sikorski wants to get across through his Eagle Scout project.  Sikorski, a Boy Scout from Garden City who is a part of Troop 55, has been actively involved in the Boy Scouts of America since his Cub Scout days in elementary school. Sikorski put together the “ Rock Above the Influence - Battle of the Bands” event as his community project to advance in his journey of becoming an Eagle Scout.  Sikorski’s idea of a battle of the bands was influenced from his own love of music, and a desire to influence the community to make smart decisions.  “I’m really into music, I play guitar,” stated Sikorski. “I want it to be an outreach for kids to not drink and drive.”  “Rock Above the Influence” will…

The entire class of 167 fifth-graders made up the cast and crew that wowed their audiences in morning and evening performances on March 29 and 30. The students began working on this project in January under the incomparable direction of their music teacher, Mrs. Meredith Lavin. Mrs. Lavin was able to present a performance that most professional productions would envy with the help of teachers, parents, and members of the community. Black Hole Exhibit at Cradle of Aviation

February break workshop to examine one of science's most powerful and puzzling subjects.

Want to bend time and space, get stretched thin like spaghetti and, perhaps, vanish into another universe? Go climb into a black hole. On second thought, that might be a bad idea. A much safer trip? Visit the Cradle of Aviation, which next week is offering a daily class dedicated to helping kids grasp one of the great mysteries of the universe. "There is a fascination about black holes, and I think it revolves around the fact that it's been touched on in movies and other forms of science fiction," said Andy Parton, the executive director of the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City. "It's a vast nothingness that nobody truly understands. It's a great mystery." Classes will start at noon each day, and run about each hour until 4 p.m. The…
