Adulthood Is Not Child's Play!

Some colleges have a letter which can be signed by both parties, allowing you access to theirRead More grades, etc. I would recommend asking about it.
Ann May 19, 2013 at 09:14 am
As a college professor, we know that many of the students are not "adults" but LEGALLY weRead More are not allowed to discuss the student with the parent. We know that it is the parent that is most often paying for college, but without a signed letter of consent. signed by both the parent and the student, we are LEGALLY NOT ALLOWED to discuss the student with the parent....no matter how much we want to.

I completely agree with you...and that's my point. Our system does define adulthood by age (and tooRead More young of an age in my opinion) when it shouldn't be. And personally, I think talking on your cell phone or texting while driving should be an immediate loss of license.

College and the economy go hand in hand.State colleges are affordable.Someday all these uselessRead More college courses will be eliminated but until then why send your kid to a 50k a year school to take classes in something that has nothing to do with their chosen field.Disecting a pig for accounting major as an example

My daughter's school spent a ridiculous amount of time prepping the third grade for these tests...Read More time that would have been far better spent LEARNING ACTUAL CURRICULUM. In addition, my daughter (who is in her school's gifted and talented program) suffered loss of sleep and anxiety over the "what ifs" of "not passing" these tests. Apparently the teacher practically terrorized the class with scenarios of remedial reading and tutors if the kids did not do well. WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too much pressure, WAAAAAAAAAAAAY too much time away from curriculum, and WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too much emphasis on these tests.

I second BD's suggestion about using KeePass, which is . It's a great way to store passwordsRead More securely. You set it up with a master password that you can enter with an on-screen keyboard to avoid key-loggers designed to steal passwords, and it can be installed on a USB "thumb drive", so you can take it with you when you travel. When you record one of your passwords, it indicates how strong your password is. Storing your passwords in a notebook is handy, but how secure is a notebook in case of a burglary, fire, water damage or just loss?

For a more high tech solution look into the app KeePass. It's a password vault that stores all yourRead More passwords encrypted. To go a step further, install Dropbox on each device you use (including smartphones) and place the KeePass database within a DropBox folder and your passwords will be accessible everywhere. KeePass can also generate highly secure passwords for you, then the only password you'll need to remember is the one to access KeePass.

Are you on wyzant.com? It is transparently linking parents and tutors. The parents rate tutors. MostRead More give me 5 out of 5 rating for sat verbal test prep, ap history and the like. Needless to say, the bulk of my new businesd has come from wyzant.com. now they are america's largest on line marketplace for in home tutors. Check it out, if you have not already done so.

How Much Is That College In The Window?

Right you are, Mary. Which only goes to prove that, the more you ask, the more you will find out.Read More And an educated student is a college's best consumer! Thanks for reading, and for posting.

Here's how you can tell how accurate an estimate from a college's net price calculator is: if itRead More asks 30 to 40 questions (financial and academic) then your aid eligibility, net price and out-of-pocket cost estimates will be accurate. And these are easy and fast to use - taking 10 to 12 minutes to answer. About 1,500 colleges posted sophisticated NPCs that are based on current costs and use algorithms to reliable create personalized estimates. Unfortunately, the majority of post-secondary schools built their NPCs on a federal template that is based on two-year-old cost information, doesn't follow the federal formula for estimating need, and uses need questions to estimate merit aid. NPCs based on the federal template ask 12 or fewer questions.

Sorry for the confusion, I am aware of what need blind means, and I was not saying that it had to doRead More with the students decision. I was stating that, contrary to your blog, most schools are not need blind.
The College Whisperer™ April 27, 2013 at 08:38 pm
"Need blind" has to do with factoring in financial need in the COLLEGE'S decision toRead More accept or deny, not the STUDENT'S decision whether or not to attend. In other words, colleges that are "need blind" do not consider a student's financial need when making admission decisions. Finances are always a consideration for the student, and should be taken into account both in deciding where to apply and where to go. How much, if anything, a college will offer -- whether need based or merit -- is another story entirely.
Matthew Kolbert April 27, 2013 at 12:54 pm
Since when are most colleges need blind? As someone who went through the application process justRead More this year, financial aid was a major factor in my decision, and I found that only the most well endowed colleges are need blind.
