Women's fashion retailer declares bankruptcy, announces store closures.
After filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy a few weeks ago, fashion designer Betsey Johnson's company has announced that most of the chain's 63 stores will close, including the Roosevelt Field Mall location. According to a Forbes article, the filing will likely result in the dismissal of 350 employees. It listed “severe liquidity problems” and $4.1 million in outstanding unsecured obligations owed to vendors, manufacturers, service providers and other creditors including jewelers, watchmakers, banks and accountants. While the stores are closing, fashionistas will still be able to find Betsey Johnson gear at Saks Fifth Avenue and Bloomingdales, along with a handful of flagship locations. Whimsical Garden City cafe earns Readers' Choice Award after garnering most votes.
When it comes to treating mom to a special Mother's Day brunch, The Cupcake Corner is the place to go. When we asked Patch readers this week to vote for the place in Garden City that serves up the best Mother's Day brunch, this whimsical cafe, located in the West End at 61 New Hyde Park Rd., emerged as the winner. Laura and John Graney's gourmet shop took 46 percent of the votes. Rein at the Garden City Hotel came in a close second. Courtney Basel earns 'Excellence in Business Education Scholarship Award" and will be recognized at Pineapple Ball.
The Garden City Chamber of Commerce will be celebrating the accomplishments of local community members at its 10th annual Pineapple Ball Friday night. Among those to receive accolades this year, will be Garden City High School senior Courtney Basel. Basel is the recipient of the Chamber Foundation’s 2012 “Excellence in Business Education Scholarship Award.” This award recognizes the student who best exemplifies the spirit of the Garden City business community by achieving academic success in the area of business. Basel was selected by the Garden City High School Business and Guidance Departments, according to Christopher Murray, president of the Chamber's charitable foundation. Highlight new design and additions to the Garden City-based shopping center.
New restaurants, renovated and redesigned space, and a Neiman Marcus store will be coming soon to Roosevelt Field Mall. Roosevelt Field General Manager Nadine Nakamura was on hand at the Council of East Meadow Community Organizations’ (CEMCO) meeting last week to give an overview of the project and answer questions pertaining to the redevelopment. Roosevelt Field was built in 1956, and underwent renovations in 1993 and 1998, according to Nakamura. “We are sorely due for an upgrade,” she added. The new Neiman Marcus will be added to the mall near Macy’s. Seasons 52, a restaurant, is now open, with The Capital Grille and Havana Central slated to open by the year’s end.
