Field Hockey Downs Mercy, 4-1

Garden City, N.Y. – Earlier this evening, the field hockey team picked up their second win of the season over Mercy College in a 4-1 non-conference contest. Each team traded goals within the first 20 minutes of action, but Adelphi pushed ahead 2-1 before the half and then tacked on two more insurance goals to seal the deal. With the win, the Panthers move to 2-8 while the Mavericks drop to 1-7.
 
Emilee Rahner gave her team a kick start less than five minutes into the game when she picked up a loose ball in front of the Mercy goal and slapped a shot right past Kristen Znaniecki to give Adelphi the early 1-0 lead.
 
However, the Mavericks would get that one back at the 17:10 mark. With a crowd of players surrounding goalie Kelly Serrao, it was Yolie Nyero who managed to dig out the ball and pass it to teammate Marissa Kluber. With one swing of the stick, her shot found its way to the back of the net, evening the slate at 1-1.
 
Before intermission, Jamie Ackerman had a chance to retake the lead. At the 28:39 mark, she was awarded a penalty stroke and did not miss the opportunity as she lifted a shot right into the top left corner for the go-ahead goal.
 
The second half proved to be a one-sided affair. The Panthers maintained possession of the ball for the majority of the 35 minutes and had 14 penalty corner opportunities while the defense held the visitors to just three shots.
 
Molly Cuevas picked up an assist on Adelphi's third goal of the game which was scored by Jamie Ackerman, her first of the season, to make it a 3-1 contest. At the 52:33 mark, Cuevas put in the fourth and final goal of the game on an unassisted play in front of the net. It was her fifth of the season which puts her at a tie with teammate Cassie Cabral for the goal leader.
 
Overall, eight women registered shots, six of them were on goal. Serrao picked up her first win of the season and made one save while Kristine Puzio closed out a scoreless Mercy in the second half.
 
Adelphi is back in action on Saturday, September 29 when they take on Franklin Pierce University in Rindge, NH at 11am.
