Men's Lacrosse Set To Host Scotland National Team On Thursday

Garden City, N.Y. - The Scotland Men's National lacrosse team is coming over to the United States for the second time in the past three years to tour across Long Island and compete in friendly scrimmages against various colleges, one being Adelphi University. The first, and last time they came over was in 2010 prior to the lacrosse World Championship games. The tour was held in Baltimore Maryland where Scotland played against Towson, Navy, Stevenson, Catholic U and Capitol Lacrosse Club.

The teams the Scotland will be taking on this year, throughout their tour are LIU Post University, Stony Brook and Adelphi University. Five quarters will be played in each of these games. They also have three walkthrough practices scheduled at Stony Brook (October 19 at noon), Post (October 18 from 10-12), and Adelphi (October 17 at 12:00-2:00 pm) as well. A regular practice will also be held at Adelphi University on October 16th, Thursday, from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. The match between Scotland and the Adelphi Panthers will take place on October 17th at 6:00 pm.

Adelphi's head coach, Gordon Purdie, is looking forward to this match as well. "Anytime you have an opportunity to step on the field and play a sport you love for your country of origin, your feel an overwhelming sense of pride and accomplishment," stated Purdie. "The Adelphi Panthers have there own sense of PRIDE and when they host team Scotland on Thursday night you are sure to see a great lacrosse game."

Prior to the Lockerbie air disaster in December 1988, the men's game had not been represented in Scotland since the turn of the century. The tragedy of Pan Am Flight 103 saw many Syracuse University students perish and on a memorial visit one year later the University's lacrosse team were surprised they couldn't play against the Scotland Men's National Team. In light of this, the Scots were challenged to pull together an inaugural and bona fide team; this was achieved some eight months later and following the 1990 World Championships the men's team played their first representative match. Scotland has competed in at every European and World Championships held.
