The Haverford School will be hosting the 6th Annual Checking for Cancer Lacrosse Invitational on Saturday, April 12th. The day will feature a full slate of high school varsity boys and girls games with exciting match ups. New this year— due to the increased interest in girls’ lacrosse in the area, the event has been expanded to include The Agnes Irwin School as a host location for the girls’ games. The boys’ games and two youth games will be featured at The Haverford School. Aside from great competition, the primary purpose and motivation behind the formation of CFC is to promote awareness of prostate, colorectal and testicular cancers.

The game lineup is currently:

High School Boys:

  • The Haverford School vs. La Costa Canyon

  • Salisbury School vs. Penn Charter

  • Garden City vs. Bronxville

  • St Augustine Prep vs. Brunswick School

  • Chatham vs. Salesianum

High School Girls:

  • Merion Mercy Academy vs. Notre Dame Academy

  • The Agnes Irwin School vs. Germantown Friends

  • Harriton vs. Boyertown

  • Baldwin vs. Wissahickon

  • Gwynedd Mercy Academy vs. Central Bucks South

Haverford School Head Coach, John Nostrant, a cancer survivor, remarks “The Haverford School is an all boys school which fits well with the mission of the event which is supporting those affected by men’s cancers. We like to focus on awareness and early detection. By educating the whole family, including sisters and wives and moms (who can also get colorectal cancer), we improve the chance of catching these diseases early”.

Checking For Cancer honors John and the many men and families who have faced their ultimate struggle against cancer. Although it is a male patient population that we are focusing on, these cancers affect the whole family as the patient leans on loved ones for support during treatments. John has exhibited the strength and character to successfully conquer the cancer battlefield, and looks forward every year to being able to raise funds to help other families who are in the midst of their own cancer experiences.

On the business side, CFC has raised over $180,000 in just five years, with all event profits earmarked for cancer research and for those organizations in need of special support. In 2013, $30,000 was donated to Cuddle my Kids (www.cuddlemykids.org), The Kimmel Cancer Center, Bringing Hope Home (www.bringinghopehome.org) , and The University of Pennsylvania.

This event has been successful every year because of our corporate sponsors, patrons, program book advertisers and admission donations. We thank everyone in advance for their enthusiastic support and for their interest in learning more about male cancers. There will be lots of information available on the day of the event for you to read and take home. Help us spread the word about early detection! You could save a life.

Please visit www.checkingforcancer.org to learn more about this charity event and to and make a donation to help us make a difference.

We hope to see you on April 12th!
