30-Hour Fast at Garden City Community Church

Article and photos by Francie Cohn

“Hungry for Recovery,” the 30-Hour Fast, took place at Garden City Community Church Feb. 22-23 when 20 youth, 10 leaders and other members of the congregation fasted from noon on Friday to 6 p.m. Saturday to raise funds and awareness for the recovering communities the youth will serve this summer on their Mission Trip.

On Saturday, the group met with Project HOPE crisis counselors to learn about the stages of emotional recovery and how the affected people are feeling four months after Hurricane Sandy. In the afternoon, the group traveled to Long Beach to meet with two high school teachers whose homes had been destroyed. It was eye opening to hear their stories and see how recovery efforts are going in the area. At "hour 27" of the fast, the youth baked bread to give to the congregation on Sunday morning - a daunting task!

The 30- Hour Fast challenged the group physically and spiritually. It also offered an education into what our neighbors are still experiencing and how we can help them rebuild and regain hope going forward.

Garden City Community Church is located at the corner of Stewart Avenue and Whitehall Boulevard. It is an “Open & Affirming” congregation of the United Church of Christ, so no matter who you are, or where you are on life’s journey all are welcome. Please join us on Sundays for the 8:30 a.m. Communion service or the 10:30 a.m. worship in the Sanctuary.  Church Sunday School is held during the 10:30 service, with babysitting available  for children under 2 years old.
