Acing NYSSMA Sight Singing - A Prep Class Presented by the Music Academy of Garden City

Do you know where nearly all singers lose points on their NYSSMA adjudication?  Sight singing!

What is sight singing?

NYSSMA singers are given a piece of music they have never seen before and asked to sing it. This skill is only mastered through careful practice and a strong foundation in principles of music theory. This is perhaps the most unnerving part of a NYSSMA solo and students rarely feel adequately prepared for it.

How does one practice sight singing?

Contrary to what many believe, students can practice sight singing and improve their score on NYSSMA's sight singing section. The Music Academy's Acing NYSSMA Sight Singing classes will afford students an opportunity to develop and refine their sight singing skills through our proven methods.

Our small group classes will include:

1. Learning to use and apply solfege syllables to note reading, increasing singing accuracy of melodic direction and melodic intervals.

2. Sequential examples designed by the instructor which are tailored to the specific NYSSMA guidelines for each student's sight-singing level.

3. A materials packet that includes notated examples of the skills learned, in addition to exercises for use at home to reinforce sight-singing techniques and significantly improve the student's sight-singing proficiency.

Students can register for as many or as few classes as they wish. There is no registration fee, contract or other commitment. All classes are held at the Music Academy of Garden City, 32 Nassau Blvd South, Garden City, NY. 516-292-2777.

This weekly course is only offered at the Music Academy of Garden City and is taught by our faculty member Mrs. Janet Hoffner. Mrs. Hoffner has taught classroom vocal music in Nassau County public schools for the past 13 years. During this time, she has prepared many vocalists for their NYSSMA festival solo performances, and has also served as a NYSSMA adjudicator.
