Bites Nearby: Grimaldi's

Coal brick-oven pizza and a whole lot more.

You could stand on a corner and look around until a restaurant sign draws you in. But we've got a better idea. Each week, Garden City Patch picks a great restaurant either in town or nearby that is worth checking out. Here's this week's choice:

GRIMALDI'S PIZZA – It has been written that the coal makes the taste of a Grimaldi’s pizza. No argument here, as this tasty, thin-crust, brick-oven pizza has been soothing the palates of Garden City residents for years. The menu features a personal pie (12 inch) for $9, up to an 18-inch large white pizza with garlic for $18. You want toppings? You got toppings – more than two dozen choices from pepperoni to Cajun shrimp. Calzones are also available in personal, small and large sizes.

Grimaldi’s appetizers include the tasty spinach artichoke dip with tortilla chips for $9. There are six different salads on the menu. Try the chopped salad for $10. Served over a bed of romaine lettuce, it features diced tomato and cucumber, onion and mozzarella with balsamic reduction dressing. It can easily serve three people. Ask for green olives on the side.

Desserts are plentiful. A personal favorite is the tartufo for $5. Owner Russell Ciolli takes pride in the quality of his wait staff, and they deliver with fast, friendly and efficient service. Restaurant manager Dean LaLima is a warm and gracious host.

Grimaldi’s is an ideal setting for an athletic team function or birthday parties (call ahead). Another favorite is Happy Hour (4 to 7 p.m. weekdays) for adults. 980 Franklin Avenue. 516-294-6565. Open daily for lunch and dinner. Prices: $9 to $18 for pizza (no slices).
