Six Things to Know: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Edition

Dreams Come True: On Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Monday, Jan. 20, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Young Adults are invited to stop by the Garden City Public Library and "discover how dreams come true" in artworks by famous African American artists. Look for clues as you learn amazing stories about history told in pictures. Then create your own American dream collage under the guidance of Joyce Raimondo. This program is limited to 25 YAs; call 742-8405 to check availability.

: The Children's Room at the Garden City Public Library celebrates the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday, Jan. 20, with a book display. Children can check out books such as Martin Luther King and the Fight for Equality by Sarah Ridley; Martin Luther King, Jr.: Civil Rights Leader by Pat McKissack; I Have a Dream: The Life and Words of Martin Luther King, Jr. by James Haskins; and Martin Luther King Jr.: A Life of Fairness by Tonya Leslie, as well as Let’s Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day by Barbara DeRubertis; Martin Luther King Jr. Day by Reagan Miller; Martin Luther King Jr. Day by Trudi Strain Trueit plus many more.

: The Long Island Children's Museum will be open Monday, Jan. 20, between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Sanitation Schedule: 
There will be no garbage or recycling pickup for Monday, Jan. 20, and there will be no rubbish pickup on Wednesday, Jan. 22. The holiday collection schedule will be as follows:

Western half of village (west of Rockaway Avenue)

Garbage: Tuesday and Thursday

Rubbish: Wednesday, Jan. 29

Residents scheduled for recycling on Jan. 20 are asked to put their recyclables out on Monday, Jan. 27. All other recycling days remain the same. Rubbish collection has been rescheduled to Wednesday, Jan. 29.

Village Offices Closed Monday: Please be advised that village offices will be closed on Monday, Jan. 20, in observance of Martin Luther King Day. Offices will re-open at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 21.

Blood Drive: There will be a blood drive Monday, Jan. 20, at Roosevelt Field Mall, Macy's Center Court, 630 Old Country Road; 10:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Click here to schedule an appointment.
