Cornstalks, Flags Add Ambiance to Downtown Festivities

The Chamber of Commerce, American Legion, Boy Scouts and their leaders have donated hundreds of hours over the years and residents and business have also contributed to the funding.

The Garden City Chamber of Commerce reports that on Columbus Day, American flags were flying on Seventh Street and festive cornstalks now adorn all the light poles both on Seventh Street and Franklin Avenue from the LIRR tracks up to Stewart Avenue.

The American flags have been raised on all national holidays for the past 51 years; and now on Sept. 11. The Chamber of Commerce, sponsor of this patriotic project, oversees funding and the American Legion's William Bradford Turner Post 265 coordinates the raising and lowering of the flags by Garden City's Boy Scout troops 55, 56, 80 and 243.

The chamber, legion, scouts and their leaders have donated hundreds of hours over the years and residents and business have also contributed generously to the funding.

The cornstalks, placed by Feldis Florists this past Saturday, will add ambiance to the chamber's 32nd fall festival street fair and Garden City High School's Homecoming Day parade set for Saturday, Oct. 15. They are made possible by donations from 81 supporters of the street fair and will remain in place through Halloween and beyond.
