LIPA Emergency Work on Washington, Transverse Causing Delays, Detour

Work expected to last approximately six to nine weeks.

For the next six to nine weeks, the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) will be performing emergency repair work in the vicinity of Washington Avenue and Transverse Road to replace a major underground electrical cable, according to an alert on Garden City's village website.

Village officials were informed of the work on Tuesday, Nov. 15.

Robert Mangan, Garden City's director of Public Works, Frank Koch, the village's superintendent of water and sewer services, and Sgt. Grimes of the Garden City Police Department met with LIPA, Nassau County and Bancker Construction officials prior to the start of emergency repair work.

"It's a pretty serious repair," Mangan said. Mayor Don Brudie asked Mangan to keep in touch with LIPA on an "almost daily basis" to monitor the work and its affect on area residents.

Bancker Construction is excavating and shoring two concrete road panels south of Transverse Road and on the east side of Washington Avenue, according to the website alert.

Work will take place between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m. and efforts are being made to keep traffic delays to a minimum. A traffic detour cuts through the Nassau County courts, at the insistence of the Garden City Police Department.
