The top five things you need to know May 18:

1. School Budget Results: Garden City residents supported the school district’s budget of $101,117,058 million Tuesday night. The 2011-12 budget, which carries a 2.58 percent tax levy increase, received 1,820 yes votes and 1,081 no votes.

2. GCMS Gym Groundbreaking: The Garden City Middle School gymnasium groundbreaking ceremony takes place today at 4 p.m. The renovations are included in the district's $36.5 million bond referendum residents approved in October 2009.

3. NCC's 51st Annual Commencement: Nassau Community College’s 51st annual commencement is being held Wednesday, May 18 at 7 p.m. at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Dr. Donald P. Astrab, president of Nassau Community College, will serve as the keynote speaker.

4. Library Reducing Hours: The board of library trustees at a special meeting May 14 voted to reduce the library's hours of operation beginning June 1, the start of the new fiscal year.

5. Seventh Street Memorial Plaques Have Arrived: The finishing pieces for the relocated Seventh Street veterans memorial arrived this week. Crews were busy installing some of the plaques Monday. See our photo gallery of the careful installation.
