Professional Firefighters Ask Residents to 'Fill the Boot' Friday

Annual fundraiser hits Seventh Street between noon and 4 p.m.

Garden City’s career firefighters will be holding their second annual “Fill The Boot” fundraiser Friday from noon to 4 p.m. on Seventh Street.

All proceeds will be donated to The Maurer Foundation.

The International Association of Firefighters encourages affiliates to organize fundraising and awareness campaigns in support of the fight against breast and other cancers.

Over the last several years, IAFF affiliates across North America have participated in events throughout October.

The Maurer Foundation was founded by Dr. Virginia Maurer who is a resident of Garden City and is a prominent breast surgeon and breast cancer specialist. She has been in private practice since 1981 and currently maintains two offices in the New York area.

One of the many programs the Maurer Foundation runs is a wellness and prevention class designed specifically for high school juniors and seniors. This annual program benefits dozens of high schools around Long Island, including Garden City High School.

Last year the Garden City Fire Department had a pink fire truck visit Garden City. Thanks to Walk Street and many of the other merchants on Seventh Street, last year more than $3,000 was collected and donated to the Maurer Foundation.
