Stay Cool at the Garden City Pool

Residents - young and old - beat the heat.

Garden City residents seeking relief from the blistering heat flocked to the Garden City Pool Tuesday. While temperatures reached a high of 103 degrees, the pool turned out to be a refuge from the sizzling heat wave summer has ushered in.

The folks at Farmers' Almanac predicted hotter than normal temperatures for summer 2010 and so far it seems they're right on the money.

While the weather may have been the impetus for spending some time at the pool, the first order of the day was having fun.

The triple-digit temperature didn't seem to have an adverse affect on 2-year-old Riley Quinn. He was taking advantage of the pool's library selection and was very pleased with his book.

Colleen Gunn enjoyed taking a dip into the pool with daughter Delaney who was all smiles.

Annie and Mary Kate Sweeney relished their swimming escapades in the baby pool. Mary Kate just learned to use her neon pink goggles and was ready for "Jacques Cousteau" exploits.

Siblings Jaclyn, Sofia and Joseph Guzzo, along with friend Matthew Santantonio, were getting ready to camp out and enjoy the movie showing, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. Movie night is a summer tradition at the pool where many pajama-clad children snuggle up for an outdoor screening of favorite family features.

Seven-year-old Ronnie Marciano revealed his strategy for keeping cool: "Jumping in the pool." Ryan and Cara Tierney chose a shady hill for a little rest and relaxation.

An outdoor movie night wouldn't be complete without the popcorn. Kathleen Gallagher and Clare O'Malley were serving up the piping hot treat.

O'Malley was taking the weather in stride: "This is as fun as it can be on a hot day."

Kelly Allen was serving up frozen concoctions at the famous ice cream outpost.  "We sell a lot of ice cream here, especially on days like this and hands down Chipwich is the most popular," says Allen.

Customers Emma and Abigail Benzinger found ices more to their suiting and a perfect summer treat to stave off the heat.

Patty McLaughlin remarked how nice the pool complex is in the early evening but couldn't resist adding, "Thank God for central air conditioning, it was the best investment ever."
