West End to Flip Switch on Holiday Season Friday

Tree lighting Dec. 14 on New Hyde Park Road.

West End merchants will usher in the holiday season Friday with its annual tree lighting ceremony, resurrected two years ago after an approximate decade-long hiatus.

Festivities kick off at 5 p.m. in the small park on Plattsdale Road, next to Garden City Dental Associates. The park, which was recently refurbished by local Boy Scout Christopher Stumpf, a member of Troop 56 here in Garden City, and dedicated to U.S. veterans, now serves as a passive place for residents, merchants and shoppers alike to reflect and relax.

Friday's event will include music and dancing courtesy of Broadway Bound Dance, St. Anne's School choir and Gabriella Pulice, the daughter of Ernie, the owner of Gallery Pizza.

Santa Claus will also make a special appearance to help flip the switch on the 2012 holiday season. The Western Property Owners' Association (WPOA) has purchased new lights for the Christmas tree, which will illuminate the West End's business district.

The Cupcake Corner will provide complimentary hot cocoa.

This event began more than 10 years ago during former mayor Frank Tauches' tenure, organized by the merchants in cooperation with the village board and administration.
