Garden City Scout Leader Pleads Guilty to Child Porn Charges: A Garden City Boy Scout leader pleaded guilty to distributing child pornography to others via the Internet in April. Edward Orenchuk, III, 23, pleaded guilty to the top count against him - promoting a sexual performance by a child as a sexually motivated felony - in exchange for a promised sentence from Judge Angelo Delligatti of six months in jail and 10 years of probation with sex offender restrictions, according to Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice. The images contained children as young as 5 years old, Rice said.

Police: Healthcare Worker Steals $81K Worth of Jewelry: In September a home healthcare worker was arrested for stealing more than $81,000 worth of jewelry from a 73-year-old Garden City resident. Sara Cruz, 25, of Lindenhurst, while employed by the 73-year-old female victim, removed assorted jewelry valued at approximately $81,750 from the St. Pauls Place residence, police said.

House Cleaner Busted on Hidden Camera Stealing Money, Jewelry: In April, an Elmont woman while employed as a house cleaner was busted on hidden camera stealing money and assorted jewelry worth approximately $45,000 from a Euston Road home, village police said. The victim installed a hidden camera in her bedroom and on April 12 Maria Iezzi, 56, was seen on camera taking money out of a drawer. Police reports further state that the defendant later exited the home carrying a white plastic bag that she placed on the passenger street and drove off. Village police conducted a vehicle stop on Stewart and Garfield avenues and after an investigation placed Iezzi under arrest without incident.

Mom Charged With Attempted Murder a Garden City Bus Driver, Lunch Monitor: In January, A Garden City woman was arrested at her Pine Street home after attempting to kill her husband during a domestic incident, according to Nassau County Third Squad detectives. Elizabeth Marrinan, 47, was arguing with her 57-year-old husband and when the argument turned physical Marrinan took a steak knife and stabbed her husband in the chest, police said. Marrinan worked as a bus driver for the Garden City school district as well as a lunch monitor at Stewart School.

Alert Resident's Tip Helps Police Apprehend Larceny Suspect: In November, an alert resident and some good police work led to the arrest of a West Hempstead man who police believed was responsible for hundreds of vehicle larcenies in Garden City and beyond. James Robinson, 45, was arrested after a Locust Street resident tipped police off that his car alarm had sounded just after 3 a.m. Robinson was in possession of stolen property from multiple vehicles at the time of his apprehension, police said. He'd already been arrested five times by Garden City police and 52 times prior throughout Nassau County.

Burglary Detail Leads to Major Arrest: In December, a burglary detail in Garden City to help determine a recent pattern of break-ins and attempted break-ins led to the arrest of Fritz Byer of Freeport, police said. An investigation by village police, along with the Hempstead Police Department and the Nassau County Police Department Criminal Intelligence Rapid Response Team, revealed that a vehicle stolen during an Osborne Road burglary was located on Peters Avenue in Hempstead. The side door to the residence was found damaged Nov. 18; items stolen included car keys, money and jewelry. The keys were used to take a 2013 Honda from the driveway. Garden City police conducted long-term surveillance and Byer, the operator of the stolen vehicle, was subsequently arrested.
