Sweet Adelines Serenade Garden City

Female singers celebrate 'Sweet Adelines Day' July 13 with barbershop harmony.

Did you hear the singing ladies who were entertaining restaurant patrons, railroad commuters and other passersby in Garden City on Friday?

These female singers are part of the Greater Nassau Chorus, a chapter of Sweet Adelines International, a worldwide organization of women committed to advancing the musical art form of barbershop harmony through education, competition and performance. As first place regional winners, they are now preparing for their international competition in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Why were they out and about this past weekend entertaining our townsfolk? July 13 is “Sweet Adelines Day” - the day that this organization came into being 67 years ago.

Always looking to recruit new members and to share the love of their craft, they serenaded the public in different venues that day in observance of their “holiday” and with an eye towards recruiting others who may be interested in singing barbershop harmony.

If you, your mother, sister, daughter or wife have an interest in this pursuit,  join Greater Nassau Chorus at their summer rehearsal site located at Hofstra University, Dempster Hall (Studio A) on Tuesdays from 7–10 p.m. Even if you are not interested in participating, listening guests are always welcome!
