Garden City Boys Lax Wins Second Straight State Title

Trojans collect sixth overall title in dominating win over Jamesville-DeWitt.

It's not always easy to live up to expectations when the expectation is to win a state championship.

But the Garden City Trojans boys lacrosse team is not one to disappoint.

James Sullivan won 18-of-25 faceoffs and junior Cody George scored five goals as the Trojans knocked off the Jamesville-DeWitt Red Rams 13-8 en route to their second consecutive New York State Class B title.

The win gives Garden City its sixth overall state championship.

Senior Justin Gutering -- a strong candidate for the state's "Player of the Year" -- finished with two goals and three assists in his last game as a Trojan.

The game was tied 3-3 at halftime before Garden City broke things open with an eight-goal third quarter, taking a huge 11-5 lead into the final frame.

“I don’t think there’s a team around that can stop our offense,” Jamesville-DeWitt coach Jamie Archer told Syracuse.com. “When you have the ball for less than a minute in one full quarter, what can you do? They played a great game."

The win comes just three days after the Trojans snuck past Niskayuna in the state semifinals on the strength of a goal from Dale Stasco with just two seconds left.
