Two incumbent trustees proved victorious in two highly contested run-off elections in the East and Estates sections of Garden City Tuesday.

The names of Dennis Donnelly (East) and John DeMaro (Estates) will appear on the official village election ballot in March. The gentlemen bested their opponents, Francine Ryan and Gregory Blair by 205 and 127 votes respectively.

Donnelly received 441 votes to Ryan's 236; DeMaro received 335 votes to Blair's 208.

Donnelly was first elected to the board in 2009. Prior to his service as village trustee, he served as president of the Eastern Property Owners' Association (EPOA) and chair of the Joint Conference Committee (JCC). He and his wife, Nancy, have lived in the village for 45 years. They have three grown children: Tara, Erin and Brian.

"I am very happy that the residents of the eastern section of the village have put their faith in me for a third term as village trustee," Donnelly told Patch. "I will continue to work with my colleagues to maintain village at a high level while keeping taxes to a reasonable level."

Ryan congratulated him on the win. "I want to congratulate Mr. Donnelly on his win and to thank all the incredible people on my team who worked so hard and gave so much passion and commitment to my campaign," she said.

DeMaro is current board liaison to the Garden City School District. he is a partner in the law firm of Ruskin Moscou Faltischek, PC, where he is chair of the firm’s Intellectual Property Group and a member of the Litigation Department. He and his wife, Kim, and their three children, Timothy (11), James (9), and Julia (7) live in the Estates section.

"I want to thank the residents from the Estates for supporting me," he said. "I look forward to working for the village for another two years."

Blair congratulated DeMaro and the Estates Property Owners' Association on their successful campaign. He also thanked his supporters.

"I wish to convey my gratitude and appreciation to all those who supported my campaign," he said. "I hope we made a positive contribution to elevate the level of debate on the issues among the electorate. We're proud of the race we ran and I look forward to maintaining my involvement at a very high level on a going forward basis."

Just a year ago voters headed to the polls in both the East and Estates when trustees Nick Episcopia and Brian Daughney were challenged.

Um, what about the West? Who is the next mayor?

Watras

Can we get a confirmation on that. Have not seen it posted anywhere. Certainly not the village website which had no mention of an election, polling places or times.

Nobody ran against the Community Agreement. Some candidates ran against the nominating committee candidates, as allowed by the Community Agreement.

John Watras is poised to become Garden City's forty-fifth mayor.

clearly larry quinn ran against the community agreement and i wish the backers would just admit the plain truth. if he did not run against the agreement why didn't he challenge bob bolbruch; think about it

Congratulations to Trustees Donnelly and DeMarco, the people have spoken once again for true community leadership and representation.

Congratulations To D. Donnelly. Please let's get some sense here. If one is interested in helping Garden City, they should volunteer on Committees, or run as a Director in there property owners assoc. They will learn the process and contribute ideas. Don't just walk in with an agenda and expect to be a trustee or a mayor without a history of work done for the Village. Gerri moratti

We have a bigger problem here. The voters are disengaged and that's dangerous. Comfortable for the POA regulars, but dangerous to all, including them.
Greg Blair January 30, 2013 at 05:58 pm
Congratulations to John DeMaro. You ran a good race and our neighbors have made a good choice. My wife, who knows how deeply I immerse myself in solving problems, is also not unhappy with the outcome!
Bob Orosz January 30, 2013 at 09:15 pm
To Mr. Blair: Out of about 16k registrated votes in this village only a few hundred votes were cased in this run off and only about 2k to 3k for the school budget. One only has to go to any BOT or School Board meeting to see to lack of public involvement. Mr. Blair, you spoke about being disengaged will these are some prime examples. People don't get Involved, don't volunteer, don't get engaged and that is a shame, for all of us. It is my hope that in the future that you become more engaged by committing your time to better serve this community but only time will tell.
Greg Blair January 30, 2013 at 09:19 pm
I intend to become engaged to a very great extent, but that's only one more. The answer is not to castigate the disengaged but to find ways to inspire.

just reading Jane Goodall with my son for school and came across this quote of an amazing womanRead More "every individual matters, every individual has a role to play, every individual makes a difference." that is what makes our nation, our village so great everyone has an opinion whether we agree with it or not. It just saddens me to think some may not voice their opinion in the future because of the rather harsh comments which I'm sure were just meant to get a point across rather than be hurtful. Garden City residents are not afraid to get involved, to stand up for what they believe in and I am proud to live here.
