Garden City Pizza a 'Dough Raiser'

Large "slice" of sales being donated to American Cancer Society and Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.

Join Greg Bavaro and company Oct. 6 for a "dough raising" experience at Garden City Pizza and BOSOM BUDDIES to help raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research.

BOSOM BUDDIES was founded in 2010 by Long Island breast cancer survivor Darcy Novick. A large portion of the event will be donated to the American Cancer Society and Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States, other than skin cancer, according to the American Cancer Society.

Although this will be the first dough raiser event, Garden City Pizza is no stranger to philanthropic work that benefits breast cancer research. According to Bavaro, who owns the Franklin Avenue pizzeria, the eatery has helped organize and sponsor two events with the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund and for the last few years has helped Novick with her Bosom Buddies LI Comedy Fest.

"I (and I'm sure most people reading this) know many people that have been affected by this disease. My mother in-law, a couple of close friends and a few of our really loyal customers have all battled breast cancer," Bavaro told Patch, "and I'm happy to say, due to awareness and early detection will all be able to join us on Saturday! What better reason than that?"

Garden City Pizza will continue to help Bosom Buddies throughout October, making a donation for every new Facebook friend or Twitter follower they receive. All of Novick's friends and teammates will also be saving their October receipts and Garden City Pizza will donate back a portion of those sales as well, Bavaro said.

Local businesses Salon Imperiale, Things and Stuff, Bagelman of Garden City and Clean Scene Laundromat are supporting the event, according to Bavaro. Any other businesses are welcome to get involved.

Have lunch or dinner Saturday, meet Darcy and buy a BOSOM BUDDIES sweatshirt or T-shirt to help the cause. WBAB 102.3 FM, will be on hand Saturday with giveaways.
