Kings Ready for Winter Blast

Store manager Connie Deckel says supermarket is in "great shape" as Winter Storm Hercules bears down on Northeast.

Kings is ready to take on "Hercules," the first major winter storm of 2014.

According to store manager Connie Deckel, the Garden City supermarket has been prepping for the winter blast since Tuesday.

"We're in great shape," Deckel said. "Since we've known since Tuesday about the storm all Friday deliveries are coming today."

Garden City is expected to see anywhere from 5 to 9 inches of snow through noon on Friday, according to the National Weather Service.

Deckel is also expecting a pallet of salt this afternoon. Kings carries pet-safe salt as well as the regular variety.

Milk and water have been flying off the shelves and the store is definitely busier than usual as residents prepare for the storm.

"We have plenty of dry ice here too in case the power goes out, along with our generators," Deckel said.

Kings plans to stay open until 9 p.m. Thursday and re-open Friday at 7 a.m.

"We've never closed [because of a storm]. A lot of people are local and have four-wheel drive," she said.
