Seventh Street Staple Shutters

Riesterer's says goodbye to Garden City.

A Seventh Street staple has closed its doors.

Riesterer's Bakery, located at 96 Seventh Street, served the Garden City community for more than five decades.

A sign on the front door says that "after 50 plus years and a substantial rent increase" the bakery is relocating to its "larger West Hempstead store" located at 282 Hempstead Ave., the Riesterer family's flagship store.

Trustee Dennis Donnelly, board liaison to the village's business community, said it's a shame such a mainstay of the Seventh Street business community has closed.

"Riesterer's has served baked goods to our community for over 50 years. The closing will leave the village without a bakery," he said. "Hopefully the store will be rented in the near future."

Riesterer's joined the Garden City Chamber of Commerce in 1961 and was one of the oldest businesses in the village. The chamber named Karl Riesterer “Garden City Business Person of the Year” in 1995.
