Vacant in Garden City: Shimmer Closes Its Doors

The ladies boutique first opened in late 2012.

After less than a year in business, the ladies boutique Shimmer has closed its Franklin Avenue doors.

The clothing store opened in late 2012 at 679 Franklin Avenue, at the corner of Seventh Street, former home of McMahon Realty.

"That's a tragedy," said John Wilton, chair of the Merchant, Professional and Retailers Groupas he updated the village board at Thursday's meeting.

The spot had been vacant for a year after McMahon Realty closed and Shimmer opened. McMahon was previously located at 166 Seventh Street before moving to 679 Franklin Avenue in August 2002.

"When something closes that means there just wasn't enough capital infusion to make that particular operation successful," Wilton added. "Could be bad management, could be quality, could be delivery of services, goods, food and pricing but it's still an issue that we need to address so again I need to emphasize the need to shop very locally."
