West End Promotions

In an effort to drum up more business in Garden City's West End, New Hyde Park Road merchants are taking matters into their own hands.

According to Laura Graney, co-owner of The Cupcake Corner, a mailing is expected to hit the 7,000+ households in the village within the next two weeks full of special promotions merchants are offering on that side of town.

"We are often thought of as the step-children of Garden City," Graney said, adding, "It's a small strip of merchants, but there's a lot going on and a lot that we offer ... We need more traffic."

The brochure will offer discounts on services and products and weekly specials at eateries like Gallery Pizzeria & Restaurant and The Cupcake Corner.

According to Graney, the following merchants are participating: The Cupcake Corner, Gallery Pizzeria & Restaurant, Garden City PubStudio B Hair Salon, Long Island Pediatrics, Garden City Dental Associates, Broadway Bound Dance CenterGarden City Auto & Tire Center, All Island Dermatology, Mallozzi & Dwyer, CPAs P.C. and Body 30.

"I'm excited about this because we're really coming together and doing this as a group, which is great," Graney said. "If this works out well, we will continue to advertise as a group and promote our section of Garden City."

Times have been tough for Garden City's business district. Within the past year, at least a dozen businesses have closed up shop.

And the village's food/restaurant industry saw, in some cases, a 25 percent decrease in February alone, according to John Wilton, chair of the Garden City Merchants Group, a subcommittee of the Garden City Chamber of Commerce working to keep Garden City's business sector healthy through promotions and aggressive advertising.

Ernie Pulice, owner of Gallery Italian Restaurant and Pizzeria, located at 52 New Hyde Park Road, said the special promotions are "something nice" to do for the community."

"I've been here since 1984, it's just something nice to do for our customers," he said.

For Pulice, business has been good despite the economic downturn; he is actually expanding the restaurant in the near future.
