Fire Commish: We Will Not Put Up With Union Thuggery: Trustee Dennis Donnelly, appointed fire commissioner, read a statement at the May 2 village board of trustees meeting that, in part, addressed what he described as "union thuggery." Donnelly said Garden City's volunteer firefighters have been "inundated" with harassment on their personal jobs by union reps in solidarity with Garden City's fire union ever since the village laid off six professional firefighters earlier this year.

Slain Hofstra Student Killed by Police Bullet: After a home invasion near Hofstra University a Nassau County police investigation revealed that 21-year-old Andrea Rebello was killed by an officer's bullet during the standoff between suspect Dalton Smith, who was also killed during the incident, and county police.

Library to Lay Off Five, Close on Sundays: The Garden City Public Library board of trustees had to make some difficult decisions in order to close a $234,638 budget gap. After approving the $3,238,209 million budget, trustees unanimously voted to lay off three part-time typist clerk positions, one full-time typist-clerk position (35 hours/week) and one full-time maintainer (40 hours/week), close the library on Sundays, increase overdue fines by .25 cents per day and charge for paper in all the computer rooms for those who need to make copies. These moves got mixed reaction from many of the residents who commented on the article.

Bomb Threat Evacuates Stratford School: Stratford School was evacuated May 14 after a reported bomb threat. After a thorough search of the school by the Garden City Police Department "no danger" was found.

Motorcycle Driver Succumbs to Injuries: A deadly motorcycle accident on Stewart Avenue near Roxbury Road May 29 took the life of a 22-year-old Adelphi University graduate student. Darien Yohannan, 22, succumbed to his injuries after crashing into an SUV.

Demi Lovato Signing Autographs at Roosevelt Field Mall: The first 300 fans to purchase Demi Lovato's new album, "Demi" at the f.y.e. store in Roosevelt Field Mall received a wristband that gained them access to the pop star's autograph signing on May 14.

Vacant in Garden City: Franklin Avenue Activity: An update on businesses moving into the strip of empty storefronts on the east side of Franklin Avenue between Ninth and Tenth streets got the attention of many Patch readers.

Crime Blotter: Garden City Middle School Custodian Arrested: Police arrested a Garden City Middle School custodian April 25 after an investigation revealed the male 34-year-old from Freeport stole a student's cell phone from the cafeteria the day before.

'Hot Dog Hooker' Arrested in E. Garden City: The infamous "hot dog hooker" was arrested May 24 in East Garden City after allegedly offering to perform a sexual act on an undercover detective.

PD Identifies Person Responsible for May 21 Bomb Threat at Stratford: Police identified the person responsible for the May 21 bomb threat at Stratford School though no further information was provided by the Garden City Police Department. The incident put Stratford under lock out for approximately 40 minutes and was the second at the school in a week.
