Cuomo: Gas Headed to Long Island

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Saturday said that 8 million gallons of gasoline have arrived and another 28 million gallons are being delivered to New York terminals.

The deliveries come as Long Island residents anxiously wait in line for hours to fill up gas tanks at the few stations with petroleum supplies.

Cuomo, who was also touring the devastated areas of Long Beach and Lindenhurst today, added that a gas shortage remains in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. But the state was taking action.

“The shortage of gasoline in the New York-metro area has caused major inconveniences for our residents, and the state must take every action possible to address this issue,” Governor Cuomo said in a press release. “Although there is much work to be done, I have directed the state to temporarily suspend gasoline distribution related requirements so gasoline and other fuels can be transported throughout the region and New Yorkers can return to life as normal as quickly as possible.”

Nearly two-thirds of the gas stations in the New York metropolitan area are out of gas, according to ABC News.

But Cuomo said not to panic, because "gas stations will be getting fuel."

To supplement the local gas supply, Cuomo also dispatched several 5,000-gallon fuel trucks to the Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens and Staten Island Armories as well as the Freeport Armory on Long Island. Nassau Police have since said there will be no fuel delivery at the Armory Saturday.

Cars were to fill up directly from the truck and be limited to 10 gallons each.
