Here are the Five Things You Need to Know for July 12:

1. Coach Smith: Accolades are still streaming in for Garden City varsity baseball coach Richie Smith, who achieved his 600th team win during the 2011 season. Find out who honored him this morning on Patch.

2. Crime: Garden City police report a spike in residential burglaries this year. As of July 8, 15 residential burglaries were reported in Garden City so far this year. During the same time period in 2011, there were seven reported residential burglaries in the village.
