Long Island Rail Road will begin to provide limited service this afternoon, the MTA has announced.

Off-peak fares in effect until full service is restored and no onboard penalty fees will be charged, the MTA said.

Commuters will have to go another day without Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) service.
The Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) announced Tuesday at 10:30 p.m. that service would remain suspended indefinitely due to the lasting effects of Hurricane Sandy.
According to the MTA LIRR Facebook page:
"LIRR personnel are working hard to make repairs after the devastation of Hurricane Sandy. Trees are down and there are signal and power outages throughout LIRR territory, as well as damage from flooding. Regretfully, service remains suspended for now."
Photos of downed trees and power lines on the tracks were posted throughout the day on the MTA's Facebook page.
While the corporation's cleanup crews were working for most of Tuesday, no set time has been announced for restoration of services. The MTA has promised that service to the LIRR will be restored when it has become safe to do so.
Commuters do have other options to enter New York City. The Department of Transportation told the Associated Press that the Brooklyn, Manhattan, Williamsburg and Queensboro bridges reopened to all vehicles on Tuesday.
