Motorcyclist Killed in Garden City at Powerless Intersection

A 20-year-old man was killed Tuesday night in Garden City after he was hit on his motorcycle at an intersection with a traffic light out due to a power outage caused by Hurricane Sandy.

According to Nassau County detectives, around 8:25 p.m., the man was operating a 2001 Kawasaki motorcycle northbound on Washington Avenue with an 18-year-old female passenger.

The motorcycle struck a 2003 Econoline van that was traveling eastbound at the Stewart Avenue intersection.

The driver of the motorcycle was transported to Winthrop University Hospital where he was pronounced deceased at 8:50 p.m. by hospital staff, police said.

The female passenger was transported to an area hospital and treated for fractures to both arms, police said. No further injuries were reported.

Police said that there is no criminality suspected at this time and both vehicles were impounded from scene.

Identification of the deceased is being withheld pending family notification.
