A somber 9/11 remembrance ceremony culminates Patch news week.

Patch bid farewell to summer as it ushered in another school year in Garden City. To kick things off, the Trojans silenced Mepham 28-0 in their football season opener, Patch sat down with Stratford School's new principal, Eileen Vota, and spotlighted Garden City's marching band and Challenge Day program.

Dave Mejias officially announced his withdrawal from the state Senate race, endorsing Francesca Carlow, whom he would've been running against in a Sept. 14 primary. In other political news, a 4th Congressional District debate turned ugly between legislator Francis Becker, the Nassau Republican nominee, Frank Scaturro and Dan Maloney.

We ended the week reflecting on a day that changed the world forever. Garden City's fire department held a 9/11 remembrance ceremony at the village green memorial Saturday to pay respect to the 23 village residents lost in the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center nine years ago. The Town of Hempstead also held a moving ceremony at Point Lookout beach in which hundreds attended, as did Nassau County at Eisenhower Park earlier in the week.
