Weekly Recap: Body Found, Heat Wave, Baseball Champs

In case you missed it, here are Garden City's top stories from this past week.

Busy week? No worries. Patch highlighted the top stories of the week you may have missed:

1. Body Found at Hempstead Lake State Park: A body was found floating by a fisherman Thursday evening at Hempstead Lake State Park. Police have not yet confirmed whether the body is 28-year-old Catherine Brady, who went missing after last spotted on Father's Day in the North Pond area of Hempstead Lake State Park.

2. Box Truck Smashes Into LIRR Trestle ... Again: A box truck traveling southbound on Nassau Boulevard smashed into the Merillon Avenue train trestle of the Long Island Rail Road Thursday afternoon. A car following too closely then plowed into the rear of the wedged truck and was pinned beneath it.

3. Parente Case Profiled In New Book: ournalist Mary Papenfuss spotlights fathers who kill their families in her book, Killer Dads, which chronicles five cases where families have perished at the hands of the patriarch, including the Parente family of Garden City.

4. Resident Becomes Latest Victim of Phone Scam: A Hilton Avenue resident reports a phone scam where a person posing as a representative of Publishers Clearinghouse telephoned her to advise that she won the grand prize but to receive the money she would have to send a $3,000 check to the company to cover the taxes. The resident never received the prize.

5. Garden City U11 Baseball Wins Section 5 Championship: The Garden City U11 boys baseball team won the Section 5 championship this week, beating Bayside 4-1. The boys now seek to capture the New York State championship next week at Half Hollow Hills.

6. Excessive Heat Causing Traffic Light Malfunctions: Police commissioner Kenneth Jackson reminds motorists to treat a malfunctioning traffic light as a Stop sign. There have been several reports of malfunctions throughout the village due to the heat.
