A Word From Mayor Don Brudie

Village Election March 19: The annual Village Election will be held on Tuesday, March 19, from noon until 9 p.m. at Village Hall, 351 Stewart Avenue. Village residents will be voting for the following candidates:

John J. Watras: Mayor, 2-year term
Dennis C. Donnelly: Trustee, 2-year term
John A. DeMaro: Trustee, 2-year term
Richard V. Silver: Trustee, 2-year term
Robert A. Bolebruch: Trustee, 1-year term
Allen S. Mathers:   Justice, 4-year term

Since the incorporation of the village in 1919, members of the board of trustees in Garden City have been elected by a non-partisan vote of residents in accordance with the policies of the Community Agreement.

Shop and Dine in Garden City: I would like to ask you to do your part to support all businesses within Garden City. I would also like to encourage all residents and professionals within Garden City to shop locally. Your patronage will be appreciated and is needed.

Many residents consider shopping and dining in our business districts as “experience shopping” because they meet friends and neighbors along the way and have an opportunity to interact with them. This is in stark contrast to frantically dashing through the crowds in the mall or the big box retailers.

I encourage residents to make a conscious effort to choose Garden City as the place to shop and dine. Customer service, selection and quality are outstanding.  While shopping or dining let the merchant know that you appreciate them and all that they offer.

Keep in mind but for these merchants and businesses within our borders on Seventh Street, New Hyde Park Road and Franklin Avenue you would have to leave the comfort of your village to dine, shop or even to buy a newspaper. 

Outdoor Dining: Beginning on April 1, working under a special permit from the village, food establishments on Seventh Street, New Hyde Park Road and Franklin Avenue, will place tables and chairs outside their shops and restaurants for your convenience and enjoyment. When this program begins, please stop by to let the merchants know that you appreciate their efforts and enjoy the many fine tastes of Garden City.

Board of Trustees Meeting: The next regularly scheduled board of trustees meeting will be held on Thursday, March 21, at 8 p.m. The meeting will be held in the boardroom at Village Hall. I encourage all residents to attend board of trustees meetings so as to be thoroughly informed of village issues from a first-hand perspective.

S.T.O.P. Program: The Town of Hempstead Sanitation Department will conduct the first of its monthly S.T.O.P. (Stop Throwing Out Pollutants) program next Saturday, March 23. The program, which is held at various locations throughout the Town of Hempstead, will make hazardous waste facilities accessible to as many residents as possible.

This Saturday’s program will be held at Eisenhower Park, Parking Field 3, in East Meadow. Take Hempstead Turnpike, to Park Boulevard, which will take you through the center of Eisenhower Park and follow the signs to Field 3. The hours of operation will be 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Under the S.T.O.P. program, residents are able to take polluting materials to the facility and have them disposed of by a registered professional disposal company, free of charge. The facility will not accept the following materials: ammunition, explosives, fireworks, infectious or medical waste, propane or oxygen tanks, radioactive materials, unlabeled materials and fire extinguishers. Non-conforming or damaged propane tanks can be returned to the establishment that refills your barbeque grill tanks.
