Santa Helps Flip the Switch on Holiday Season

Residents flock to Village Green for 59th annual village tree lighting ceremony on a snowy Sunday afternoon.

Santa Claus arrived in style Sunday to help Mayor John Watras officially flip the switch on the 2013 holiday season in Garden City.

Festivities for the Garden City Chamber of Commerce's 59th annual tree lighting ceremony kicked off at 3:30 p.m. on the Village Green.

The Garden City High School Vocal Jazz Ensemble, directed by Stephen Mayo, plus the Fivestone Contemporary Rock Band, performed the holiday classics while, for the first time this year, the Garden City Recreation Dancers entertained the crowd.

King’s mascot, “Kingsley Bear,” was again on hand for photo-ops with the youngsters; the Garden City Fire Department provided hot chocolate; and local eateries, including Honestly Delicious, Dunkin' Donuts, Bagelman, My Three Sons Bagel Café, the Garden City Hotel, Key Food Marketplace and Kings, graciously donated holiday cookies.

Santa arrived via Garden City firetruck to help light the village trees - one at the Village Gazebo; the other at the mall at Franklin and Stewart avenues.
