Reports: Cuomo Names LIPA Chair

Governor taps Lawrence Waldman to lead the board following exodus in the utility's leadership ranks.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo has named Long Island Power Authority trustee Lawrence Waldman chairman of the board, following the resignation of former chairman Howard Steinberg, according to multiple reports.

While the governor's office has not made a formal announcement, both the Associated Press and Newsday have confirmed the appointment with anonymous state officials.

Waldman, a parter in the accounting firm of EisnerAmper, had been in charge of LIPA's finance and audit committee. The governor has also named RXR Realty president Michael Maturo to the utility's board, according to the reports, bringing LIPA trustee number up to nine members, one more than it needs to hold a quorum and conduct business.

His books will be in order and we will be without power.

If someone says I have an electric personality then I'm thinking I would be just as qualified as the rest of the board. just saying............

I bet you all voted for Obama.
Frank December 12, 2012 at 08:15 pm
@ localguy. That and a boatload of money.and plenty of Vasoline.
i heard Edward Smookler (LIPA's own Suzette Smookler's husband) dropped off a bunch of toys at Skelos' toy drive.
Frank December 12, 2012 at 08:16 pm
OK I'll take the bait: What does Obama have to do with LIPA and NYS?
Paul Michael December 12, 2012 at 08:20 pm
Nothing

Time to book the natgas-powered backup generator order.
Rick Ueland December 12, 2012 at 11:28 pm
Disappointed that they didn't select a real professional. But at least it isn't Kaiman and just hope he's there to shut the door and turn the lights out on LIPA!
Steve December 13, 2012 at 12:14 am
I just called my accountant to check his availability , I need some outlets changed and some wiring done . We really need our heads examined for voting airheads like this to office. Kiss the national forum goodbye Cuomo.
Nassau Taxpayer December 13, 2012 at 12:34 am
While an accountant at the LIPA helm is useless as (pick your metaphor), we could certainly benefit from a forensic accountant to find out how our ratepayer funds have been squandered all these years..
Ben Dover December 13, 2012 at 01:09 am
I think I saw this movie before----same old--same old---it never changes
John Pine December 13, 2012 at 03:20 am
This guy sounds clueless. But it's not suprising, Cuomo's father put the wheels in motion for LIPA when he stopped Shoreham and saddled ratepayers with the debt. Just a chip off the old block. Cuomo don't give a damn about Long Islanders, maybe we should secede from NY and become part of NJ, at least they got their stuff together over there. Christie would dissolved LIPA!
Goin' Commando December 13, 2012 at 05:57 am
It needs to be much more than forensic accounting, which can only get to the validity of transactions but probably will miss the big picture of how LIPA has been run, and what its objectives should be.
Nassau Taxpayer December 13, 2012 at 11:40 am
To be sure, the storm was an Act of God. The lack of response, however, was purely LIPA's incompetence.

Nassau Taxpayer: I agree with you on the Forensic Accountant BUT the fix is in.
Bottom line people on Long Island have to start generating their own power and relay less and less on LIPA and New York State in general, and have a escape plan out of New York. Bottom Line: Do not ever TRUST anybody in GOVERMENT.
paul December 13, 2012 at 01:29 pm
"Bottom line people on Long Island have to start generating their own power "
Now that is funny. A born and raised Long Islander could not even rub two sticks together to make a fire....

Pardon me but are you confusing the Chairman's function with the CEO's function?
Tony December 13, 2012 at 02:05 pm
What does Obama have to do with Lipa and NYS? About the same as Prez Bush did with Katrina. Yet Obozo still talked this year of Bush's failing in Katrina and how that would never happen under his watch. The emporer has spoken. Now, what's he done for you? Raise your taxes. Nice job BO, your initials tell the story of your presidency but would be more appropriate if they were BS.
Getting back to the story, I find it astounding that Cuomo wouldn't put someone in who has a ton of experience running an actual power company. Just shows he's just another political hack giving back to no one except his friends.
Tony December 13, 2012 at 02:07 pm
LOL!! Great line and in the category of sad but true.
JR T. December 13, 2012 at 02:08 pm
We don't know, that's the problem. Why not put someone in place that has a proven track record of managing a crisis to reassure the residents of Long Island that the next time something happens of this magnitude, there is someone in charge that can handle it. It makes you wonder if Gov. Cuomo really cares.
Tony December 13, 2012 at 02:17 pm
I had an escape plan 8 years ago and executed it perfectly---packed up and moved the family to FL! Best thing I've ever done. Excellent, modern school. Boys play ball year round. Have lost power exactly twice in 8 years--once for an hour and another for about 3 hours when a small plane crashed into a transmission line. Haven't had 1 hurricane hit here, though kids have had 3 hurricane days off of school when the sun was shining! Strongest wind in my area was 62mph about 2 months ago from a thunderstorm. House was half the price and more than twice the size. Electricity costs 5 cents/kw plus another 5 for the fuel surchage which actually does vary according to their supply cost. About the only things I miss are Yankee Stadium, MSG and the local food on LI.
Good luck with Cuom and the new LIPA idiot, you're going to need it.
Tony December 13, 2012 at 02:19 pm
Yep, I agree. Talk about a bunch of weasels. Both parties. Trow da bums out!
Nassau Taxpayer December 13, 2012 at 02:25 pm
Pardon me, but are you confusing LIPA with a well run utility?

AND WE'LL RE-ELECT COMO AGAIN IF HE DOESN'T GO FOR POTUS. WE CAN'T STOP FALLING OVER OUR OWN SELVES.

Robert, Nassau Taxpayer, Local Guy and Steve----you made my day and gave me a smile and a hearty laugh. I agree with all of you, but just do not have your gifts with words. God Bless.

I want to know why they couldnt ask Florida (who is prone to these situations) how to keep everything up and running!!!! I think someone who is in the field should run it..not who he picked..
Ranger Sewer December 13, 2012 at 10:10 pm
Build your own Solar set up with a Wind turbine. Don't have to let anybody know and watch your bills drop. You do not have to put solar panels on your roof to have them work. You can hide them in plan sight.
ConnectingDots December 24, 2012 at 04:26 am
Isn't this guy connected to Rockville Centre? I think his wife is a principal in one of the school? Skelos strikes again.

just reading Jane Goodall with my son for school and came across this quote of an amazing womanRead More "every individual matters, every individual has a role to play, every individual makes a difference." that is what makes our nation, our village so great everyone has an opinion whether we agree with it or not. It just saddens me to think some may not voice their opinion in the future because of the rather harsh comments which I'm sure were just meant to get a point across rather than be hurtful. Garden City residents are not afraid to get involved, to stand up for what they believe in and I am proud to live here.
