Msgr. Edward L. Tarrant, 88, Pastor

Former associate pastor at St. Joe's passed away on Feb. 28, 2013.

Msgr. Edward L. Tarrant, former pastor and chaplain, passed away Feb 28, 2013 at the age of 88. He was born on Oct. 1, 1924.

A native of Manhattan, Msgr. Tarrant was a student at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. He was ordained for the Diocese of Brooklyn on June 8, 1950.

Tarrant served in the Rockville Centre Diocese as an associate pastor at St. Joseph's in Garden City starting in September, 1960. He also served as chaplain for the Newman Club at Nassau Community College, chaplain at St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School in West Islip and the diocesan director of the Catholic Dentists’ Guild.

Msgr. Tarrant was an associate pastor and a summer assistant at St. Therese of Lisieux in Montauk, as well as associate pastor at St. James, Setauket, and as administrator and pastor at St. Ignatius Loyola in Hicksville. He retired in 1999 with residence at Corpus Christi Mineola, but in his retirement continued to work as needed as temporary administrator at Maria Regina in Seaford, and Most Holy Trinity in East Hampton.

He is predeceased by his brother Kevin (Alberta). He was the uncle of Marybeth, Maureen Fitzgerald (John), Kevin (Merri) and Colleen Schule (Todd) and is survived by many great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.

Wake services were scheduled for Corpus Christi in Mineola on March 4 with Bishop-elect Robert Coyle celebrating the Mass of Transferral. Bishop William Murphy will preside at the funeral mass on Tuesday, March 5 at 11 a.m. at St. Ignatius in Hicksville.

Visitation will begin on Tuesday, March 5, at 8 a.m. at the St. Ignatius Loyola Church in Hicksville with the Mass of Christian Burial commencing at 11 a.m. with interment at Holy Rood Cemetery in Westbury.
