Mr. Pomponio became an “honorary” member in 1998 with the status of lieutenant; the rank and status he maintained until his untimely passing.
It
is with deep regret that Garden City Police Commissioner Kenneth
Jackson announces the passing of a long-term member of the Garden City
Special Police, Ralph G. Pomponio.
Mr. Pomponio joined the Garden City Special
Police in December 1967 and steadily rose through the ranks until he
became a lieutenant. He was elected captain in March 1988 and held
that position until 1990 where upon he returned to the rank of lieutenant.
It was on May 31, 1998 that Mr. Pomponio retired from the Garden
City Special Police and was persuaded by then captain Felix Jakubowski
to continue his service to the village as an
“honorary” member with the status of lieutenant; the rank and status he
maintained until his untimely passing.
During his years with the Special
Police, Mr. Pomponio served the community by contributing to traffic details, special events, holiday patrols, park patrols and emergency details.
Throughout his tenure as a Special Police Officer, Mr. Pomponio was
very instrumental in assisting the police department in ensuring the
safety and well-being of the residents of Garden City.
For his
contributions to the village, Mr. Pomponio was awarded the Law and Order Award
from the William Bradford Turner American Legion Post 265 in 2001. His witty comments and sense of humor will be greatly missed at the
Special Police monthly meetings and around police headquarters.
