In July 2011, the Kiwanis Club of Garden City celebrated 60 years of service. The club has the privilege of supporting and sponsoring programs in our wonderful community in which we live, work and play. We thank the village for its generous support over the years.
The Garden City Kiwanis Club has been and remains a vibrant organization carrying on many of the projects that started long ago, including:
Kamp Kiwanis - Every year the club sends children to Kamp Kiwanis in Taberg, NY. This year we also donated money for a bench and a commemorative brick in memory of two of our members who passed away.
Kiwanis Scholarship - $4,000 in scholarships are awarded every year to deserving high school seniors who are Garden City residents. They must be service oriented and show superior leadership within the community.
Interfaith Nutrition Network - Every week a member of Garden City Kiwanis drops off a donation of bagels from Bagelman of Garden City to the Mary Brennan Interfaith Nutrition Network (INN).
Nassau Empire State Games - Garden City Kiwanians cook hundreds of hamburgers and hotdogs for the opening ceremonies for children participating in the Nassau Empire State Games (formally the Empire State Games for the Physically Challenged).
“Adopt-a-Family” - Between Thanksgiving and the holiday season, our club “adopts” multiple families, donating toys and clothing and providing a full meal for those who would normally do without.
St. Patrick’s Day Luncheon - Our signature fundraising event! Approximately 500 guests join us for a luncheon of corned beef & cabbage provided by the Garden City Hotel. They are entertained by a comedian, pipers and sing their favorite Irish tunes. Thousands of dollars in raffle prizes are given away. All the monies raised are used to fund our various programs.
We also continue to support our “sponsored youth leadership programs” (Circle K Clubs at Adelphi University and Nassau Community College, Key Clubs at Garden City High School and Sacred Heart Academy) as well as Mercy First, Island Harvest and of course, the Garden City community.
Kiwanians are part of a global community of more than 600,000 service-minded persons in more than 70 countries. We are grateful and privileged that we could partner with our community as we focus on the needs and welfare of the children and youth of our community. We invite you to consider joining our Kiwanis club. We generally meet at the Garden City Hotel the first and third Thursday of each month from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. For additional information about how you can become a Kiwanian, visit www.gardencitykiwanis.com or call 516-405-KIDS.
