Should There Be More Gun Control Laws?

In the wake of two shootings in Colorado and Wisconsin, is it time to reconsider gun control laws?

Only weeks after a deadly shooting rampage left 12 people dead and 58 wounded in an Aurora, Colo. movie theatre, a gunman opened fire at a Sikh temple in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, killing six before his life was taken by a responding police officer.

The Aurora shooting, an allegedly pre-meditated event during a midnight showing of the Batman movie "The Dark Knight Rises," heightened fears on gun safety only hours after the shooting occured on July 20th. The accused gunman, James Holmes, was found to have mental problems, but had the ability to purchase multiple weapons that he used on his rampage.

While information about Sunday's shooting continues to be released by law enforcement in Wisconsin, mass shootings have dominated the country's news over the last few decades including the Virginia Tech shooting in 2007 that killed 33 people and the Columbine High School shooting in 1999 that left 15 dead, including the two shooters.

Events like these shootings commonly have raised the question we pose to you, Babylon: Should there be stricter gun control laws? Would such laws help prevent a horrible event like these shootings? Are gun control laws of any kind a threat to the Second Amendment right to bear arms?

We want to hear everything you have to say. Leave us a comment below!

I am a 52 year resident of Garden City who now lives in Florida. In my new state we have the right to own a gun outright for home defense. If we wish to carry we need to apply for a carry license. It is an awesome responsibility to own a gun, but it is also awesome that we have the right to defend our property and families Gun control will only affect the honest people. The bad guys will be unaffected. Perhaps if a movie goer that night was armed maybe the death and injured toll would be less.

Agreed! more laws to restrict only the lawful is insane - the casualties may have been less if someone in there had their own weapon...as in this story from April: http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/opinion/54618459-82/aurora-gun-shooting-church.html.csp

what am i saying? Can you imagine four or five people, probably with only moderate training, shooting in a dark theater?
