An early morning fire engulfed a Garden City home Sunday.

Nassau County's Arson Bomb Squad is investigating the blaze, which broke in the rear yard of an Andover Court home at approximately 2:14 a.m. and quickly spread to the home.

A 41-year-old resident was watching television when he smelled smoke inside the home, according to detectives. When he looked outside, he saw a patio swing fully engulfed. He tried to put out the fire with a fire extinguisher but was unsuccessful and the fire quickly spread, according to police.

The Garden City Fire Department responded to the scene, along with Mineola, Franklin Square, New Hyde Park, Stewart Manor, Westbury and Carle Place, with 120 firefighters and 20 pieces of apparatus to extinguish the fire. Firefighters battled cold weather conditions and heavy winds.

Three Garden City firefighters suffered non–life threatening injuries and refused further medical assistance at the scene, Bomb Squad detectives said. A Westbury firefighter slipped on a patch of ice and was transported to a local hospital for treatment of a broken wrist and a shoulder injury, police said. The homeowner reported no major injuries.

This investigation is ongoing.
