Police are searching for a driver who struck a teenage girl and sent her to the hospital.

Nassau County Police said the unidentified 14-year-old girl was crossing Hempstead Turnpike when she was struck by a car that fled the scene without stopping. The force of the collision threw the girl into the air and she was struck by two other cars, both of which stopped and remained at the scene, police said.

The incident happened at Hempstead Turnpike and Shelter Lane in Levittown at 3:52 p.m. Thursday, cops said.

The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment of “multiple trauma injuries,” according to officials.

Police are searching for the driver of the first car, described as a brown or tan four-door car that was driving east on Hempstead Turnpike.

Detectives are asking anyone with information about this incident to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.

Why is there NEVER any speed enforcement or for that matter any hard traffic enforcement here. You see on Thanksgiving eve they will send out all these extra patrols and yes they get state money for that but the point here is how about flooding this road with enforcement one or twice week and people will take notice. All the No Turn on Red signs were put up for political purposes so they can say " hay we did something". Well people are still getting hit by cars. We all want to make this road safer but one has to come up with a real solution to the dangers in this road. You can cross at the crosswalk that will help but its not foolproof, I almost got hit in the crosswalk. Somebody has to get the ball rolling here.

Rocco because ED MANGANO hasn't replaced the 600 cops who have retired since he took office. He's only hired 22 officers since taking office! YOU VOTED FOR THIS! Keep it up Ed!

Our thoughts and prayers are with her and her family, I can't believe that someone would not stop. Our Grandson is in 9th grade at Division Ave. He gets a ride everyday, we are on the other side of the turnpike .They will catch this person with all the cameras down the turnpike.

This report fails to mention, as the WINS 1010 report did, that the girl was crossing against the light. No excuse for the hit and run, but pedestrians need to follow the rules, too.

It is terrible that anyone would leave the scene and of course we all hope this girl is okay. I use to think that teenagers were being irresponsible for not crossing at the cross walk for the simply fact that they are teenagers but have recently observed it is apparently what they have been taught by their parents! All you have to do is be outside Abbey Lane elementary school in the morning to observe this. Parents, every morning, are grabbing and shoving their small children across Gardiner's Avenue in the middle of the road, between cars, despite the presence of TWO cross walks and TWO crossing guards! Children learn by example. Let's hope this driver sets the right example by turning themselves in.

Any body who leaves someone hurt or left to die that THEY COULD HAVE MADE CALL and seconds could make a difference should pay the full price when the person is caught
Frank fletcher February 08, 2014 at 09:30 AM
That's right Ed. I am a longtime Levittown resident and I remember when there were several police cars assigned exclusively to patrol the turnpike and write tickets. Since Mangano has been in office, he has closed the 8th precinct and reduced the amount of cops on the street by not hiring new cops to replace the ones that are retiring. He lies to the public and says the safety of the public is not compromised when we all know less cops equals more crime and more accidents due to a lack of traffic law enforcement. We got what we voted for....now we pay high taxes and get less services. Lucky us!

Michael I agree with you I wish the woman that hit my daughter a couple of years ago had done that and she got hit bye the nassau county medical center it seems people can not slow down or stop when they are supposed to.To this day she still has pain. When this person is caught I would like to see this family sue them.Long Island is so crowded that we moved from E Meadow to the mountains of Maine.

I'm a driver, mother of teens and I sometimes cross Hempstead Turnpike. My thoughts are, as a driver, even if someone is not speeding, they can't stop on a dime and pedestrians need to pay attention. People are constantly crossing without looking. I see it everyday. As a pedestrian, the lights on the Turnpike do not give people enough time to cross from one side to another. This didn't matter in this case. As a mom, I can't believe how many hit and runs there are on Long Island. People don't have consciences anymore. It's like someone's life doesn't matter anymore, it's all about them. Also as a mom, you have to stress to your kids, PAY ATTENTION. All cars do not stop when they are supposed at lights or stop signs. Make sure it's safe to cross. We all are responsible for ourselves and our safety in what we do.
paul February 08, 2014 at 11:14 AM
With all these types of situations yes the driver may have been going fast, yes the pedestrian disobeyed the traffic device, yes both may have been on the phone or texting, yes yes yes. Certainly a portion of responsibility needs to be placed on the pedestrian. There are some that will blame the road. Like on parts of the southern state where some curves are dangerous. The road did not cause the accident, the driver disobeyed the speed limit at that point.
elizabeth baptiste February 10, 2014 at 08:07 AM
Does anyone know if they caught the person who did this?Heapstead trnpke should be made safer.Even when you are driving people try to cause an accident.Where people cross the most they should find away to make it safer. As for schools near busy intersections they should do something there. And remember this pharse CROSS AT THE GREEN NOT IN BETWEEN,!One more thing to drivers out there SLOW DOWN or it will catch up with you. When my daughter crossed hempstead trnpke that day she was lucky .
FedUpRealist February 10, 2014 at 09:14 AM
Fix the road , get more cops on patrol, it's someone else's fault, etc...Let's stop blaming other people/things...Most, if not all of these tradgedy's are a result of a human's POOR decision...CROSS AT THE DAMN CROSSWALK AND NEVER AGAINST THE LIGHT!!!...Hempstead Tpke is and always has been dangerous...Many opinions here want to 'fix' the road...HOW???...It is what it is...As a result of misguided pressure the next step is for the legislature to enact a complete ban of crossing the Turnpke...So, thousands who cross LEGALLY EVERYDAY to get to work will be impacted by the foolish few...
Vikki Sanchez February 10, 2014 at 09:29 AM
Crossing against the light is a terrible lesson this young lady learned--and I do hope others take heed. However, it doesn't negate the fact that this was a HIT & RUN or that Hempstead Tpke is extremely dangerous and under served, or that there have been too many tragedies near this particular location so close to a large HS! There NEEDS to be camera coverage there--the plate and the person would've already been found! And considering the proximity of this intersection to a HS and a Library--the best possible solution would be a foot bridge!
elizabeth baptiste February 10, 2014 at 10:04 AM
It sounds like a very good idea to have a foot bridge but do you think anyone would go for it?My daughter was crossing near hempstead trnpke by the medical center and was watching when someone went through the traffic light.Everyone seems to be in a rush to get somewhere .Over bye Hofstra University they have two bridges one looks like it was recently put up there is a fence put up bye the hospital so people can not cross why not put a fence going down the middle of the trnpke and come up with away to cross better at the lights.
paul February 10, 2014 at 12:52 PM
A Footbridge? Oh what utter nonsense. That is the most ridiculous thing to put up at that location. The road is just fine. It is well traveled as it is supposed to be. Traffic enforcement of vehicles and pedestrians are the most logical response. Lets close the Tpk and make it a pedestrian mall. NOT Sure stop all commerce and businesses. NOT
Vikki Sanchez February 10, 2014 at 10:11 PM
There's nothing ridiculous about a footbridge that gets people across the tpke. They have 2 for Hofstra don't they?! Are our Division Ave students lives less precious? Do we forget a young man died there 2 years ago? What does that have to do with a pedestrian mall or the businesses anyway? This wouldn't impact business negatively. This isn't Broadway in NYC. And anyway who cares if someone loses a dollar if it saved one kids life. Anywhere on the Tpke is a dangerous intersection and caution must prevail. And anywhere could benefit from increased police presence and enforcement. The difference here is hundreds of kids use that intersection daily because of proximity to school and library. So to dismiss out of hand any idea that might make a difference in preventing tragedies--whether it's foot bridge, gates, enforcement, or all of the above--especially after another parent shared her near tragedy--is callous and unnecessary.
FedUpRealist February 11, 2014 at 02:01 PM
The same kids who DON'T OBEY pedestrian/traffic laws are gonna use a footbridge???...Are you kidding me???....Fix the road , get more cops on patrol, it's someone else's fault, etc...Let's stop blaming other people/things...Most, if not all of these tradgedy's are a result of a human's POOR decision...CROSS AT THE DAMN CROSSWALK AND NEVER AGAINST THE LIGHT!!!...Hempstead Tpke is and always has been dangerous...Many opinions here want to 'fix' the road...HOW???...It is what it is...As a result of misguided pressure the next step is for the legislature to enact a complete ban of crossing the Turnpke...So, thousands who cross LEGALLY EVERYDAY to get to work will be impacted by the foolish few...

Has there been any update on the condition of the girl?
ed February 12, 2014 at 11:34 AM
I saw some cops the other day shooting radar in L=Town and the idiots the other way were flashing their lights to warn speeding motorists. The police can't enforce laws with idiots like this!
People Here crack me up February 24, 2014 at 02:06 PM
Well ED maybe ED MANGANO saw all the cops just parked in the parking lots bullshitting with each other all the time he figured maybe we didn't need so many cops on the streets ? ? ?
FedUpRealist February 24, 2014 at 02:40 PM
And maybe those cops in your parking lot won't respond when you need 'em...Wouldn't that be ironic...
FedUpRealist February 24, 2014 at 02:46 PM
...and maybe those parking lot cops will ignore your yelping for THEIR bravery when you don't have enough to handle your dilemna....
People Here crack me up February 24, 2014 at 03:06 PM
FedUpRealist you make it sound like they actually come fast when you call ? ? Ive called over a dozen times over the years for drunk drivers and people doing drugs in cars and Yeah they come, , 15 minutes after the person Im calling about has left, , they sit in their cars or at 7-11 instead of PATROLLING like we PAY them to do, , , Bravery my ass
People Here crack me up February 24, 2014 at 03:07 PM
I wonder where the saying came from THEYRE NEVER AROUND WHEN YOU NEED THEM ? ? ? ? ?
FedUpRealist February 24, 2014 at 03:43 PM
So you think they sit around finishing their coffee before answering a call???...Do you realize how silly that is???...
Frank fletcher February 24, 2014 at 06:17 PM
This is to People Here crack me up.......I dare you to show up at the front door of these cops' widows and tell them "bravery my ass" Police Officer Arthur Lopez Date of Appointment: July 29,2004 End of Watch: Tuesday, October 23, 2012 Age 29 Cause: Gunfire Officer Lopez was on the force for 8 years Police Officer Joseph Olivieri Date of Appointment: December 3,1998 End of Watch: October 18, 2012 Age 43 Cause: Struck by vehicle Officer Olivieri was on the force for 19 years Police Officer Geoffrey Breitkopf Date of Appointment: December 3,1998 End of Watch: March 12, 2011 Age 40 Cause: Gunfire Officer Breitkopf was on the force for twelve years Police Officer Michael J. Califano Police Officer Michael J. Califano Date of Appointment: December 3,, 1998 End of Watch: February 5, 2011 Age 44 Cause: Assault Officer Califano was on the force for twelve years When you see cops sitting anywhere, it means they are standing by in your neighborhood waiting to answer whatever comes over the radio. I am a volunteer fireman and I have the privilege of working side by side with the Nassau cops every day and I think they do a great job.
People Here crack me up February 24, 2014 at 06:57 PM
Oh please fletcher. They signed up for the job. You want to put your life at risk for a paycheck feel free. Funny that you didn't mention all the cops that park behind the fire dept every night though. Also you might want to take Geoff Breitkopf off that list since he was killed by another cop. You want to flip the story from LAZY to bravery feel free. I'm sick and pretty much everyone else I know (not related to a cop) is sick of seeing them parked in the same spot all night when they should be patrolling. -------- And to FedUp YES you moron that does sound silly. So why does it take them 15 minutes to respond to a call when they are less then a mile away sitting in the train station parking lot ???? Not assuming. I watched after called them. Just sitting in the lot 5-10-15 minutes then they responded. Must be slow on the 911 operator then right ????
Frank fletcher February 24, 2014 at 07:34 PM
Oh so you admit that cops put their lives on the line for their pay? Thats great. We're making progress here, thats good buddy. Lets move on then. Do you think that cops shouldn't be allowed to stop and use the bathroom? Or get out of their car on a lunch break? I don't think that I should take Breitkopf off the list either since he did die in the line of duty and if he wasn't a cop he wouldn't have been there in the first place. The circumstances are irrelevant since he did nothing wrong to contribute to his death. One thing we can agree upon is that you are sick, and my guess is that you don't have a job since you have all this time to constantly call 911 and then wait and watch how long it takes for the cops to get there. Also, I will go out on a limb and guess that you have been arrested in the past for whatever and you have a personal grudge against cops. My advise to you is to get off your lazy ass and become a productive member of society instead of sitting on the sidelines and complaining like a b*#ch.
FedUpRealist February 25, 2014 at 09:24 AM
People here crack me up: Tough guy like you, who you gonna call when you're getting your ass kicked???...That's right, the COPS whom you loathe...Make sure you tell them they're a bunch of rubes for putting their life on the line for malcontents/professional protesters like you!!!...Maybe they won't respond and you'll die of your injuries
