Crime Blotter: Large Fight Breaks Out at Band Festival

Garden City police responded to the following calls between Feb. 16-22.

Feb. 16: Officer Hennessy arrested a female 38-year-old and a female 18-year-old, both from New York City, for shoplifting at Lord & Taylor. Proceeds were an Eliza Gown valued at $238 and an ABS Gown valued at $350.

Feb. 18: At 1 a.m. a male 60-year-old from Hempstead states that he was walking south on Lafayette Road when he was approached by a male subject wearing a black ski cap and black clothing. The subject forcibly placed his hands inside the victim’s pockets and removed his wallet and cell phone before throwing him to the ground. The wallet contained credit cards and the cell phone was valued at $25. The victim was not injured.

Feb. 18: Someone broke a driver's side window to a 1992 Honda parked in Parking Field #6E. Value: $100.

Feb. 19: At approximately 9:30 p.m., Garden City and Nassau County units responded to the Ethical Humanist Society on Old Country Road for a report of a large fight and possibly a robbery occurring at a band festival. At the scene two victims, A male 17-year-old from Valley Stream and a male 17-year-old from Garden City South, state that they were having a verbal dispute with approximately 10 other individuals. Three of the subjects then approached the victims and forcibly removed their wallets and cell phones from them. In addition, they ripped a chain off one of the victims and then pulled his sneakers off. Garden City police officers located and arrested one of the subjects, a male 22-year-old from Centereach, at the scene. It was then determined that the two other subjects fled the scene. Garden City detectives continued their investigation. On Feb. 20, working on leads they had developed, Detectives Rothermel and Madden arrested a male 20-year-old at his Northport residence and a male 20-year-old at his Islip residence. All subject charged with robbery.

Feb. 19: High winds resulted in numerous storm-related calls including but not limited to 19 residential alarms, two traffic light outages, one railroad gate malfunction, two auto accidents and 13 hazardous condition/tree limb down calls.

Feb. 20: Officer Laurita observed a male 35-year-old from Delaware operating his auto southbound Clinton Road swerving to the wrong side of the road and speeding (50 mph in a 30-mph zone). He was stopped at Garden Street and arrested for DWI (.10 percent blood alcohol content), aggravated unlicensed operation (open suspension), speeding, two lane violations and uninsured operation.

Feb. 20: A Prospect Avenue owner reports an unknown amount of U.S. currency was stolen from the residence between Feb. 9-19.

Feb. 22: An Adelphi University school bus was damaged in the Community Park Parking Field. The hinge to the rear door was damaged. Value: $200.

Feb. 22: At approximately 11:45 p.m. three male subjects entered a taxi at the Amaneser Bar on North Franklin Street in Hempstead. One of the subjects displayed a knife to the cab driver and threatened to kill him if he didn’t drive them to Glen Cove. As the cab driver was driving on Stewart Avenue at Washington Avenue he observed a Nassau County police car driving by. He waved them down and advised them what happened. The officers arrested one of the subjects inside the cab but the other two fled the area on foot. Garden City units and an MTA canine unit assisted with the search of the two subjects. One of the subjects was found on Lefferts Road, while the other subject was found on Clinton Road. All three subjects were preliminarily charged with menacing and theft of services. The investigation is continuing in regards to additional charges. The knife was recovered. No injuries reported.
