Crime Blotter: Leandra's Law, Identity Theft

A look at this week's alleged crimes, reported by the Garden City Police Department.

The following arrest information was supplied by the Garden City Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

Aug. 5
: A witness observed a dark blue vehicle strike, and damage, a parked vehicle in Nassau County Field #2, and then proceed to leave the scene without stopping.

Aug. 7
: A large tree limb fell to the roadway on Old Country Road.

Aug. 8
: A 2005 Acura was stolen from a driveway of a New Hyde Park Road residence. The police officer at the scene activated the Lo-Jack system for the vehicle, which was instrumental in locating the vehicle in Queens later that same day.

Aug. 8
: Officer Wedra arrested a female 25-year-old from Oyster Bay for theft of a blazer, valued at $40 from Sears.

Aug. 8
: Officer Russell apprehended a male 29-year-old from Hempstead for driving with a suspended registration and a suspended license.

Aug. 9
: Officers are investigating a property damage auto accident on Clinton Road where one of the vehicles, described as a gray Honda, left the scene without exchanging information.

Aug. 9
: Officer Dallolio stopped a vehicle for passing red traffic lights on Old Country Road at Cherry Valley Avenue, and also at West Street. The driver, a male 22-year-old from Queens, was subsequently arrested for DWI (.09 percent blood alcohol content), possession of marijuana and passing two red traffic signals.

Aug. 10
: A resident reports out-of-state purchases were charged against her credit card account.

Aug. 10
: Detectives arrested a male 21-year-old from Brooklyn for the theft of $2,190 from an account belonging to a Garden City business by using a fraudulent check.

Aug. 11
: Loose change was removed from a vehicle parked at a Clinton Road residence.

Aug. 11
: A resident reports an identity theft where someone obtained a debit card to make unauthorized withdrawals from the victim’s bank accounts.

Aug. 11
: Detectives arrested a male 22-year-old from Freeport for leaving the scene of a property damage auto accident on Franklin Avenue on July 31. The subject was also charged with driving with a suspended license, unlicensed operation, suspended registration and uninsured operation.

Aug. 11
: A bicycle was reported stolen from a garage on Jefferson Street. The bicycle was recovered later that day on Wellington Road.

Aug. 11
: Leandra’s Law arrest - At approximately 8 p.m., Officer Baker was on patrol when he observed a vehicle traveling north on Franklin Avenue make a left turn onto Stewart Avenue in violation of no left turn signs. The officer then observed the vehicle veering left over the center divider lines while traveling west on Stewart Avenue. Upon stopping the vehicle, Officer Baker determined the driver, a male 48-year-old from Hempstead, was intoxicated (.19 percent blood alcohol content). The officer also observed that there were four other occupants in the vehicle, including two children, ages 2 and 4. The subject was placed under arrest for two counts of aggravated DWI (Leandra’s Law), two counts of endangering the welfare of a child, two traffic violations and uninsured operation.

Aug. 12
: The department is investigating a report of numerous unauthorized charges against a Franklin Avenue business’s account totaling more than $36,000.

Aug. 5
: A vehicle was impounded from Parking Field 2S after being declared a scofflaw by the Garden City Court, due to unpaid parking tickets.
