Crime Blotter: Afternoon Burglary, LIPA Scam Hits Garden City

A look at this week's alleged crimes, reported by the Garden City Police Department.

The following arrest information was supplied by the Garden City Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

Oct. 29: A 61-year-old man from Mineola filed a police report stating he was walking in Parking Field 7S when he was struck by a vehicle that left the scene. Garden City detectives arrested the subject for filing a false police report after it was determined the incident did not occur.

Oct. 29: While assigned to an aggressive driving enforcement detail, Officer Sommer observed a vehicle traveling southbound on New Hyde Park Road at 45 mph in a 30-mph zone. The vehicle was stopped and the operator, a 25-year-old man from Valley Stream, was charged with driving while his license was suspended. He was also charge with unlicensed operation, uninsured operation, and defective brake lamps. Later in the evening, he stopped a vehicle on Clinton Road for traveling 50 MPH in a 30 MPH Zone. Upon further investigation, the driver, a M/25 from Uniondale was charged with driving with a revoked registration, speeding, unregistered auto, unlicensed operation, not wearing a seatbelt and uninsured operation.

Oct. 30: Garden City detectives arrested a 20-year-old woman from Brooklyn for possession of a forged instrument and attempted larceny for an incident that occurred on Sept. 30 where she entered TD Bank and attempted to cash a forged check for $495. The subject had fled the scene when the bank refused to honor the check.

Oct. 30: A vehicle was stolen from an unlocked garage on Locust Street. The subject(s) apparently located the keys to the vehicle. The vehicle was later recovered at a location in Hempstead. 

Oct. 30: Sunglasses and loose change were removed from a vehicle parked at a Grove Street residence. A cellphone was taken from a vehicle parked at a Pine Street residence, and personal papers were taken from a vehicle parked at another Pine Street residence. A GPS was taken from a vehicle parked at a Commander Avenue residence. Loose change was taken from a vehicle parked at another Commander Avenue residence.

Oct. 30: A credit card was reported missing on the Adelphi campus and later used to withdraw $1,000 from the victim’s account.

Oct. 30: Police conducted a commercial vehicle inspection on Eleventh Street: 12 vehicles were inspected, seven were placed out of service and 95 tickets were issued for various traffic and safety offenses including nine hazardous material violations, four unlicensed operators, one defective trailer coupling device, a defective tires violation, two defective brake violations and an unsecured load violation.

Oct. 31: Officer Florio investigated a one-vehicle accident on Franklin Avenue, and upon his investigation, arrested the driver, a 33-year-old man from West Hempstead, for DWI (Drugs) and criminal possession of a controlled substance (alleged Ketamine).

Oct. 31: Tires to five vehicles parked in the vicinity of Tremont Street were found damaged, apparently by a sharp object.

Oct. 31: Vehicles were entered on Roxbury Road and Hathaway Drive. No loss reported.

Oct. 31: Officers assisted the Garden City Fire Department with a house fire on Hamilton Place.

Nov. 1: A wallet was removed from a handbag in a Doctor’s Office on 7th Street.

Nov. 1: An iPad was removed from a workstation at the Adelphi University Library. An iPhone charger and earphones were stolen from another workstation.

Nov. 2: Several residents report scams where they received phone calls from persons claiming they were from LIPA. The callers stated the residents were in arrears with their electric bills and that their service would be turned off unless they paid them via money cards. LIPA confirmed that these incidents were part of an ongoing scam.

Nov. 2: A 38-year-old man from Port Washington was observed on Clinton Road weaving and striking the curb. He was subsequently arrested for DWI (.14 percent blood alcohol content), unsafe lane change, no seatbelt and unlicensed operation.

Nov. 2: A wallet was removed from a vehicle parked at a Brook Street residence. An iPad was removed from a vehicle parked at a Chestnut Street residence.

Nov. 3: A Washington Avenue resident reports a burglary to his home between 1:30 and 3:30 p.m. The rear door to the residence was found broken and ajar. Jewelry and other personal items were stolen from the residence. The investigation is continuing.

Nov. 3: A 34-year-old Uniondale man was arrested on Huntington Road for DWI (.12 percent blood alcohol content), improper turn, driving on the wrong side of the road and unlicensed operation.

Nov. 3: A 2011 Infiniti was stolen from a Nissan storage facility on Stewart Avenue.

Nov. 3: Officer Russell stopped a vehicle on Nassau Boulevard and charged the driver, a 32-year-old man from Valley Stream, with driving with a suspended license and speeding (54 mph in a 30-mph zone).

Nov. 4: Four tires were stolen from a vehicle parked at a Jackson Street residence.

Nov. 5: Detectives are investigating a Grandparent Scam where a Garden City resident received a phone call from a person claiming to be his grandson who stated he was arrested in another country and needed money wired to him to obtain his release. It was later determined that the grandson was not the caller and was not arrested.

Nov. 6: At approximately 3:19 a.m. an alert Locust Street resident advised the department that his vehicle alarm had sounded. Garden City officers responded to the area, set up a perimeter and arrested the subject, a 45-year-old man from West Hempstead, as he attempted to run from the area. The subject was in possession of stolen property from multiple vehicles.
