Crime Blotter: Garden Street Burglary, Prostitution Bust

A look at this week's alleged crimes, reported by the Garden City Police Department.

The following arrest information was supplied by the Garden City Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

Nov. 6: Officer Florio stopped a vehicle on Whitehall Boulevard related to a domestic incident investigation. During the investigation, the driver, a 50-year-old man from Garden City, was arrested for DWI (.09 percent blood alcohol content) and uninsured operation. He was charged with felony DWI due to a prior DWI conviction.

Nov. 6: Officers conducted a commercial vehicle checkpoint on Cathedral Avenue. Seven vehicles were inspected and 61 tickets were issued for various traffic and safety violations. One driver, a 28-year-old man from Mineola, was charged with driving with a suspended license.

Nov. 6: The police and fire departments responded to Third Street for a vehicle that was apparently deliberately set on fire. The vehicle is registered to a Virginia address. The fire was extinguished and impounded by the Nassau County Arson Squad for further investigation.

Nov. 6: Detectives are investigating an identity theft where someone used the debit card information of a person to make an unauthorized overseas transaction.

Nov. 7: Garden City detectives arrested a 54-year-old man from Merrick for criminal impersonation, 1st degree. On Nov. 1, the defendant called Garden City Police and requested assistance in stopping a vehicle in front of a Hamilton Place home where a fire occurred on Oct. 31. The defendant identified himself as a Hempstead Police officer and gave information which was dispatched to patrol officers who were unable to locate the vehicle. This was done in an attempt to prevent a competitor from being hired as a fire adjuster by the victims of the fire. On Nov. 8, Nassau County detectives arrested the subject for impersonating a fire marshal on Oct. 31 in regards to the same fire.

Nov. 8: Officer Touhy arrested a 36-year-old woman from Levittown for the theft of $622 in merchandise from Lord & Taylor.

Nov. 8: Police conducted a commercial vehicle inspection on Franklin Ave: 17 vehicles were inspected, five were placed out of service and 108 tickets were issued for traffic and safety violations including four defective brake violations, two defective tire violations, three trailer connection violations and an unlicensed operation violation.

Nov. 9: Officer Oswald stopped a vehicle on Washington Avenue for weaving from lane to lane and striking the curb several times. The driver, a 20-year-old man from upstate NY, was arrested and charged with DWI (.12 percent blood alcohol content), unsafe lane changes and uninsured operation.

Nov. 9: A GPS was removed from a vehicle parked at a Prospect Avenue residence. A wallet was removed from a vehicle parked at a Poplar Street residence. An iPhone was removed from a vehicle parked at a Chestnut Street residence.

Nov. 9: Between Nov 8-9, someone entered a Garden Street residence and stole assorted jewelry and loose change. A rear door to the residence was found to be pried open.

Nov. 10: Police report a domestic incident in which a 24-year-old man from Garden City was arrested for the assault of his girlfriend. The subject bit the victim in the arm.

Nov. 10: While issuing a traffic ticket to a 24-year-old man from Elmont for speeding on Stewart Avenue and New Hyde Park Road, Officer Laurita observed a female occupant exit the vehicle and proceed to urinate in public view. The female, 19, also from Elmont, was issued an appearance ticket for urinating in public.

Nov. 10: Officer Oswald stopped a vehicle for swerving to the wrong side of the road on Washington Avenue. The driver, a 45-year-old man from Mineola, was arrested for felony DWI (.12 percent blood alcohol content) due to a prior DWI offense, operating a vehicle without a court ordered interlock device, possession of alleged cocaine, driving on the wrong side of the road, two lane violations, no seatbelt and uninsured operation.

Nov. 11: Officers assisted with the Veterans Day ceremony at the Seventh Street war memorial.

Nov. 11: A Ross bicycle and lock was reported stolen from a bike rack located at the Garden City railroad station.

Nov. 13: As a result of his observations while on patrol in Parking Field 2S, Officer Russell arrested a 38-year-old North Valley Stream man for patronizing a prostitute and a 45-year-old Hempstead woman for prostitution. Parking Field 2S is located on Second Street, between Franklin and Hilton avenues.
